Authorities are encouraging people not to respond to automated phone calls concerning their bank accounts. Reportedly, calls have been generated to residents in northeast Alabama and northwest Georgia, supposedly from at least two area banking institutions, representing themselves to be security from the institution. The call claims your debit or credit card has been cancelled because of a fraud alert, and the operator then advises you to press 1 to re-activate your card. If you press 1, you are asked for your card number, and if you provide that information at that point, someone has unauthorized access to your card. If you get an automated call such as this, police say to hang up immediately.
