Charlie Bailey, former attorney general and lieutenant governor candidate, was elected as chairman of the Democratic Party of Georgia, replacing U. S. Rep. Nikema Williams. He is the first full-time chair as the party seeks to enhance fundraising and energize its base after challenges following the 2020 elections.
In the runoff election for party chair, Bailey secured 53% of the votes, winning by a margin of 116 to 98 against Wendy Davis. He has previously run for attorney general and lieutenant governor in 2018 and 2022, respectively. Several prominent Democrats, including Senators Ossoff and McBath, endorsed him, with McBath delivering his nomination speech.
Bailey aims to quickly raise funds for key races in the upcoming election, especially with Ossoff on the ballot. Uniting the progressive and moderate factions of Georgia’s Democrats will be crucial for success. Bailey expressed his commitment to democratic values and getting Democrats elected across Georgia.
During his campaign, he highlighted his legal experience in defending local officials against last-minute changes made by the State Election Board. He stressed the need for the Democratic Party to appeal to voters by addressing healthcare, education, and economic inequality while criticizing the Republican Party’s failures in these areas. McBath praised Bailey for his political knowledge and fundraising abilities, emphasizing the urgency of protecting democracy.
