So while the call may look legitimate, remember no one from the Social Security Office, law enforcement, or the Internal Revenue Service is going to call you and ask for personal information over the phone.

When it comes to emails and text messages, consumers should be leery of any that have instructions encouraging you to click a link to “request benefit payments,” according to the Better Business Bureau. Also be wary of any messages asking you to “verify” your personal information, according to the BBB.

Anyone who suspects they’re being targeted by scammers should report it to both authorities and the BBB.
