A bill to name cornbread as the “official bread of Georgia” has cleared the Georgia House of Representatives.  The bill was sponsored by a Northwest Georgia lawmaker who says that in addition to Southern corn bread being a staple for generations of Georgia residents, the down-home bread also pays homage to the Native American Cherokees from our part of the state.

Dubbed HB 1048, the bill argues that cornbread deserves the prestigious title due to its “singular stature in Georgia history and culture” and its “undeniable appeal as a versatile and satisfying food.” The bill was sponsored by Republican Kasey Carpenter from Dalton, but evidently, cornbread is a bipartisan favorite with all but two Republicans and only one Democrat voting against cornbread.

State Representative Eddie Lumsden who represents Chattooga and Floyd Counties in the Georgia House voted in favor of cornbread.
