A strong cold front is sweeping through Northwest Georgia early Monday (Dec. 29), bringing a quick round of light showers, then a sharp turn toward colder, drier air and gusty northwest winds.

Residents can expect winds to ramp up behind the front, with gusts commonly 30–35 mph and occasional higher bursts, making it feel colder than the thermometer suggests. Any lingering sprinkles should fade by mid- to late-morning, but rainfall totals will be very limited—generally only a few hundredths up to a tenth of an inch.

Skies will clear as the day goes on, but temperatures will fall through the afternoon. Wind chills in the 30s are expected across much of Northwest Georgia today, dropping quickly tonight. By daybreak Tuesday, many communities will see temperatures in the 20s, with wind chills dipping into the teens (and colder in higher elevations east and northeast of the area).

Tuesday through Thursday: Dry + Breezy = Higher Fire Risk
The cold, dry air mass sticks around Tuesday, with humidity levels dropping toward critical thresholds. Even with winds easing somewhat Tuesday, the combination of very low humidity and periodic gusts may push fire danger higher across Chattooga County and the broader Northwest Georgia region. Similar concerns may continue Wednesday and possibly Thursday, so use extra caution with any outdoor burning and be mindful of spark risks—especially with New Year’s celebrations and fireworks.

Late Week: Temperatures Recover, Rain Returns
After below-normal readings Tuesday, temperatures should gradually moderate, returning closer to seasonal normals by the end of the week. Rain chances return Friday, with showers and a few isolated thunderstorms possible, and those chances may linger into the weekend. Forecast totals could be around a half-inch to one inch, helpful, though not likely to erase drought concerns on their own.
