According to Bartow County Sheriff Clark Millsap, Monday March 7th, just before 10:00am, family members reported to the Sheriff's Office that Scott Salter, age 30, had failed to make it to work as a teacher at Cass High School, so they went looking for his car. Salter's Toyota Avalon was located on the Highway 20 Spur at the Cooper Furnace Trail entrance, which is a location where Scott reportedly enjoyed hiking alone. The Bartow County Sheriff's Office coordinated with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, Georgia State Patrol Aviation Division, Corps of Engineers, FBI, and the City of Cartersville Police Department to search that area and shortly after 6:00 that evening the Georgia State Patrol helicopter notified ground units of a possible location for the missing man in a rough terrain area off the trails.
Deputies and DNR officers quickly located the body of Scott Salter.
Preliminary investigation revealed that he had died from sustaining accidental injuries.
