A Chattooga County teenager was taken to the hospital Monday, April 15, after his mother hit him in the back of the head with a plate and he jumped from a moving van.

According to the Chattooga County Sheriff's office, deputies were dispatched to the Gore-Subligna Road area in reference to a heated domestic dispute in a white van. Deputies found the van traveling down Gore-Subligna Road toward Highway 27.

The vehicle was stopped on Highway 27 at Taylor's Ridge and deputies noticed the boy in the passenger seat with a swollen eye and "blood all over him," according to the report. The boy reportedly  had scrapes all over his body, bumps on his head, and a deep cut on his left hand.

He told deputies his mother Kimberly Basham, had hit him with a plate and with her hands. He said said his mother wouldn't stop arguing with him and he went to the back of the van to try to get her to stop. He told officers that is when the fight started and he jumped out of the van while it was moving to get away from his mother because she was throwing plates at him. 

Kimberly Basham was in the back of the van and reportedly was using profanity. She told officers she didn't start the argument, and it was just a mother and son fight. She admitted to deputies that she had been drinking alcoholic beverages and taking prescribed pain pills. 

The boy's grandmother, who was driving the vehicle, said 42-year-old Kimberly Basham started cussing the boy and the fight started while they were traveling down the road. She said the boy jumped out of the vehicle when it was traveling about 20 miles per hour.

EMS arrived at the scene and the boy was taken to the Floyd hospital to get stitches tn his hand and to be checked for internal injuries. Kimberly Basham was arrested and charged with first degree cruelty to children/ Family Violence Act.
