On the morning of September 18th, a Chattooga County Deputy was dispatched to the Mohawk facility in the small town of Lyerly in response to a reported burglary. Upon arriving at the scene, the deputy witnessed the burglary suspect, later identified as Cody Mobbs, hastily fleeing the premises and running towards a nearby wooded area.

The deputy promptly exited his patrol vehicle and issued clear, authoritative commands for Mobbs to stop, identifying himself as a deputy. However, Mobbs brazenly disregarded the deputy’s orders and continued his escape attempt, forcing the deputy to initiate an active foot pursuit through the woods surrounding the Mohawk facility.

After a foot-chase, the deputy was ultimately able to apprehend the suspect. Once detained, the deputy placed Mobbs under arrest, citing his willful obstruction of the deputy’s lawful orders. Mobbs was then transported back to the patrol vehicle, where the deputy read him his Miranda rights, though the suspect opted to remain silent.

Through subsequent interviews with the witness, an employee of Mohawk gave details that painted a clearer picture of the burglary incident. The employee had approached the Mohawk building and noticed the lock on the door had been tampered with and left open. Upon entering, the discovered Mobbs asleep in the employee’s office chair.  Mobbs had ransacked the office with the employee’s belongings being scattered on the floor.

Mobbs was charged with second-degree burglary, willful obstruction of law enforcement, and criminal trespass, and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
