Every summer, Georgia has a burn ban in place for fifty-four counties, including Chattooga and surrounding counties in Northwest Georgia.  The Georgia EPD says that the ban is necessary to protect air quality in the Atlanta metro area.

During the burn ban, residents are prohibited from burning yard and land-clearing debris and other activities.  There are exceptions. Agricultural burning, forestry prescribed burning, campfires, barbeques and fire-fighting training are allowed.

It is NEVER legal to burn household garbage anywhere in Georgia.

The burn ban will end on September 30th and will be lifted until April 30, 2025.  During that time, residents may burn hand-piled natural vegetation without a permit during daylight hours.
