A Calhoun man drowned Wednesday night after the tractor he was driving flipped and pinned him underwater.

According to the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office:

James White, 72, of 366 Newtown Road, was mowing grass on an embankment when the farm tractor he was driving flipped into a small pond, pinning White under the water.

An eyewitness told investigating detectives that White had been mowing with the tractor along an embankment when the tractor began slipping and overturned.

Investigating officers believe that White was underwater for nearly 30 minutes before rescue personnel arrived. The pond itself was in an isolated area.

The Gordon County Coroner’s Office and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources are participating in the investigation.

The body was sent to the State Crime Laboratory for a post-mortem examination.

Sheriff’s personnel do not suspect any type of foul play
