For generations of families in Chattooga County, Camp Hamby has been a summertime tradition where children learn, grow, and build friendships in a setting rooted in faith and community. Operated by local United Methodist Churches, the long-running day camp has served as a welcoming place for kids to explore their relationship with Jesus while enjoying a full schedule of classic camp activities.

Founded in 1968, Camp Hamby offers a well-rounded mix of arts and crafts, nature exploration, Bible studies, and outdoor fun designed to nurture both creativity and spiritual development. The camp’s beginnings are tied to an act of generosity that made it possible—Hugh Hamby, a member of Menlo United Methodist Church, donated 9.4 acres of land to help establish what would become one of Chattooga County’s most cherished youth programs.

Camp Hamby has grown dramatically over the years, expanding from just 38 children served in 1981 to roughly 300 children today. Organizers say that growth reflects the camp’s positive, welcoming environment and its commitment to giving local children a meaningful summer experience. Camp Hamby is open to children of all denominations, offering a place where kids from different backgrounds can learn, play, and make lasting memories together.

This year’s Camp Hamby Day Camp is scheduled for June 8 through 12 and June 15 through 19. Registration is expected to begin in April for children entering kindergarten through sixth grade, with more details to be released closer to sign-up time.
