On Saturday afternoon, March 19, 2022, police  responded to a report of an unresponsive female at the Morgan Square Apartments in Cartersville.
Upon arrival, officers found Malayca Jones, 27, deceased inside the apartment.

Investigators learned, Ms. Jones’ boyfriend, Alex Bernard Joyner, 30, had been arrested in Gordon County in the early morning hours, Friday, March 18, 2022, after leading the Gordon County Sheriff’s Department on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle. Mr. Jones fled authorities, after committing two armed carjackings in Floyd County, and was armed at the time of his arrest.

Subsequently, Floyd County Police Investigators located Ms. Jones’ vehicle abandoned near the scene of the first carjacking.

On Wednesday, March 23, 2022, Alex Bernard Joyner was charged in Bartow County for the death of Ms. Jones. Mr. Joyner was charged with Murder, Aggravated Battery, Aggravated Assault, and Theft by Taking Motor Vehicle.
