Advance Voting in the 2024 Presidential Preference Primary continues in Chattooga County. Yesterday was the first of two opportunities for local voters to cast their ballots on Saturday. The next opportunity will be on Saturday March 2, 2024. All early voting takes place at the Chattooga County Registrars Office located at 10017 Commerce Street in Summerville, just south of the Chattooga County Courthouse. WZQZ News will have totals on weekend voting coming up on Monday.
State Representative Lauren Daniel (R-Locust Grove) recently introduced House Bill 1284, which would increase the penalties for passing a school bus and encourage schools to pick up students on the right side of a road that has a speed limit of over 40 mph. House Bill 1284, or “Addy’s Law,” was named after eight-year-old Adalyn Pierce of Henry County who was killed by a driver as she was crossing the road to get onto her school bus. Representatives Clint Crowe (R-Jackson) and Karen Mathiak (R-Griffin) are cosponsors of HB 1284.

Construction Ready CareerExpo wrapped up yesterday at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. Thousands of students from across Georgia attended the Expo, the state’s largest youth workforce development event for the construction industry, including students from Chattooga High School. CareerExpo 2024 also featured the SkillsUSA State Championship, a competition that allows students to showcase their skills in a number of construction-related disciplines. Chattooga High School brought home state championships in several categories. Winners will represent Georgia at the SkillsUSA Nationals Championship in Atlanta, June 24 – 28, 2024. Be sure to bring a picture ID when you come to vote. The Chattooga County Registrars Office is located at 10017 Commerce Street in Summerville, just south of the Chattooga County Courthouse. Advance Voting weekday hours are 8:30 AM- 5 PM and will continue next week. Voters will have another opportunity to vote on Saturday coming up on March 2nd.
The state Senate Economic Development and Tourism Committee approved a proposed constitutional amendment late Thursday calling for Georgia voters to decide whether to legalize not only sports betting but casino gambling. Other gambling legislation before the General Assembly this year is limited to sports betting.
