Ashley Marie Cowan, a Pre-Occupational Healthcare student from Adairsville, has been named Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s (GNTC) 2024 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) winner, and Deanna Hulsey, instructor of Cosmetology, has been named the college’s 2024 Rick Perkins Instructor of the Year.
Longtime state Rep. Richard Smith died suddenly overnight at the age of 78 after fighting the flu. Smith, R-Columbus, was chairman of the House Rules Committee, the “traffic cop” that decides which bills make it to the floor of the chamber. “This morning, the entire Kemp family is saddened by the news of Representative Smith’s passing,” Gov. Brian Kemp said in a prepared statement. “A longtime public servant and valued friend, he represented the Columbus area well and had an important impact on the entire state.”

Earlier this week Andy Allan, Republican challenger for Chattooga County Commissioner, issued a press release regarding the county’s land use ordinance. Allan said that he wanted to make it clear that while he was opposed to Commissioner Blake Elsberry’s initial Land Use Ordinance, adopted in 2022 and that he didn’t agree with the commissioner’s new Subdivision Ordinance, he did in fact support the idea of the county having legislation in place that would regulate commercial subdivision developments. Commissioner Elsberry maintains that his most recent legislation is just that, a subdivision ordinance. Elsberry sent the following statement to WZQZ on Tuesday:

The food distribution is open to residents of Chattooga County and Floyd County as well Cherokee County, Alabama. You will need to bring a valid, current Georgia or Alabama photo ID and a recent utility bill or piece of mail from the government with an address that matches your photo ID. Clients CANNOT be served without it. Volunteers cannot make any exceptions. JCFP clients can ONLY pickup for their household. Households can be served one time monthly. Journey Community Food Pantry is located off Redmond Circle, across from the old General Electric Plant. The pantry is located on the north side of the building. Pull through the yellow gates after they are opened.
The Georgia Department of Public Health’s Northwest Health District reports a decline in the widespread flu activity with which the state entered 2024.
A Chattooga County man was arrested this week in Lindale on child molestation charges. Floyd County authorities say that forty-one-year-old Mark Thirston Tate of Summerville “engaged in graphic texts with someone he believed to be a child under sixteen-years-old”. Tate is said to have travelled to a location in Floyd County “to meet that child and engage in acts that would be child molestation.” He remained in jail without bond as of Monday afternoon.
In preparation for the 2024 Presidential Election, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is encouraging the public to be active participants in the most important part of a presidential election – by volunteering as a poll worker on Election Day. Recognizing the critical role that poll workers play in ensuring a safe, secure, and accurate election, Secretary Raffensperger is calling on the citizens of the Peach State to actively engage in the democratic process and serve their local election offices.
