A new poll by the Atlanta Journal Constitution shows lackluster support among Georgia voters for some Republican leaders plans to divert public funds to private education. The poll, which was conducted by the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs between January 3 and 11 of this year shows that only around 35% of voters “strongly approve” or “somewhat approve” of the idea.
Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is announcing that She Leads will be hosting its first webinar of the new year “One-Stop Shop: SOS Licensing, Corporations, Securities/Charities.” This free webinar will take place on Tuesday, January 30 at 6pm. Registration is free and open to all Georgians.
A thirty-three-year-old Stinnett Road, Summerville man has been sentenced to eight years in prison on a drug conviction. Rickey Ferrell Ward pleaded guilty in Chattooga County Superior Court earlier this month to charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute. Ward is also a convicted sex offender. He was convicted of statutory rape in February of 2019. Ward also received twelve years of probation and has been ordered to pay $18,853.50 in fines.
The Chattooga High School Welding Team recently competed in the Region SkillsUSA/AGC Skills Challenges. The welding fab team won the MTI welding competition. The team consisted of Evan Fletcher, Gavin Collier, Gunner Henderson and Connor Ray. The team also place first in the written portion of the state qualifying event.
We are waking up to temperatures in the 9-12 degree range across the area this morning and a wind chill advisory is in place until 10 AM. The Arctic air mass will remain in place today, but we will see temperatures get slightly above freezing, with highs in the mid to upper-30’s.
With this cold, dry, air mass, over our area, critical fire weather conditions will be in place this afternoon. Relative humidity values will dip down below twenty-five percent and winds will be between five and ten miles per hour. Today will NOT be a day to burn outside. Tonight, temperatures will fall back into the low 20’s and after a sunny and somewhat warmer day on Monday, rain moves in on Tuesday with afternoon and evening thunderstorms expected Tuesday through Friday of this week.

A forty-eight-year-old Old Highway 27, Trion man was arrested this past week on charges of making a false report of a crime. The sheriff’s office says that Tony Wyatt made multiple calls to Chattooga 911 starting at 3:38 PM last Monday afternoon. Wyatt claimed in the calls that someone was trying to break into his house and that he could “hear people talking” outside his home. In all, Wyatt made five emergency calls between Monday afternoon and 3:11 AM on Tuesday morning. Deputies arrested Wyatt after responding to the last call on Tuesday morning.

Retired Georgia State Patrol Troop Commander Don Stultz Jr. announced he is running for Sheriff of neighboring Walker County. Stultz, a native of LaFayette, will be facing off against longtime incumbent Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson.
