The Georgia General Assembly is in session at the state capital and Chattooga County’s representatives had a busy day on Monday as they attended committee meetings.
The Trion Town Council will hold their first regular monthly meeting of 2024 this evening. The workshop and council meeting will be held at 6 PM at the town hall conference room. The workshop will be followed by the regular monthly meeting. Mayor Lanny Thomas says anyone with any questions, is welcome to contact him at Trion Town Hall. The public is invited to attend.
Twenty-one Republican Senators in Georgia have introduced a bill to make guns, gun safes, accessories and ammunition tax free for eleven days each year. Senate Bill 344 would make firearms, ammunition, gun safes and related accessories exempt from state sales and use taxes from the second Friday of October to the fourth Monday of October each year. The tax free holiday for gun buying would include stocks, barrels, scopes and magazines, in addition to ammo and the guns themselves. State Senator Colton Moore (R-Trenton) was not one of the sponsors of the bill. Moore was ousted by the Senate Republican Caucus last year.

Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry held a public meeting on Friday of last week to introduce three separate pieces of legislation. The commissioner spoke about the new land ordinance that has been renamed and has had some changes made to it.
Two Walker County School Board members have asked for a petition against them to be dismissed. Superior Court Judge Brian House ordered the two to appear in court to face the petition that says they should not be on the school board because they each have sons who hold positions with the Walker County School System.
History was made last Thursday when the Chattooga Board of Education elected the first female Chair and Vice Chair in the board’s history. Lori Brady, who represents Menlo on the Chattooga Board of Education was elected chair and replaces current chair Eddie Elsberry. Tiffany Lawrence, who represents the Pennville seat on the board, was elected vice-chair and replaces B.J. Montgomery.
A new poll by the Atlanta Journal Constitution shows lackluster support among Georgia voters for some Republican leaders plans to divert public funds to private education. The poll, which was conducted by the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs between January 3 and 11 of this year shows that only around 35% of voters “strongly approve” or “somewhat approve” of the idea.
Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is announcing that She Leads will be hosting its first webinar of the new year “One-Stop Shop: SOS Licensing, Corporations, Securities/Charities.” This free webinar will take place on Tuesday, January 30 at 6pm. Registration is free and open to all Georgians.
