After several weeks of very low to no COVID-19 cases being reported in Chattooga County, the Georgia Department of Public Health says that five cases were reported over the past week.  State health officials say that those are the cases reported, there could be more people who have tested positive with a home-test and have not reported to the health department.  Statewide, 3,845 new reports were filed, the most since just after the Labor Day weekend (4,059). Thirty deaths were reported in Georgia over the past week although none were from our area. Earlier this week, State Epidemiologist Dr. Cherie Drenzek shared that COVID-19 cases had increased by about 50% from the previous week with hospitalizations up 75% and deaths by 10%.

The State of Georgia’s net tax collections in the month of December totaled nearly $3.05 billion, for a decrease of $159.1 million, or -5 percent, compared to December 2022, when net tax collections approached $3.21 billion for the month. Year-to-date, net tax revenue totaled roughly $16.1 billion, for an increase of $253 million, or 1.6 percent, over the same half-year stretch in FY 2023, an increase that was driven principally by the collection of the state’s motor fuel excise tax that was suspended during the first half of last year. Net of motor fuel tax changes, revenues for the six months ended December 31 were down 2.5 percent from this time a year ago.

A rate hike approved last last year by the Georgia Public Service Commission will add about $9 a month to the electric bill of a typical Georgia Power customer. The 6% rate increase approved at the end of December had been previously negotiated between the Public Service Commission staff and Georgia Power.

The Chattooga Indians will be hosting the Trion Bulldogs on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 in basketball action and Chattooga High School has announced that it will be “Rec Night”.  All children with the Summerville Recreation Department, the Menlo Recreation Department and the Lyerly Recreation Department are invited to come to the game and wear their jerseys and need to be at the gym by 7 PM.

The American Red Cross announced that it is experiencing the lowest number of people giving blood in the last 20 years, in what the organization says is an emergency shortage.

A twenty-one-year-old Griffin man has been charged in connection with an alleged assault at the Floyd County Corrections Center on Blacks Bluff Road in Rome back on September 18.  Authorities say that the assault in the correctional facility was gang-related.

The Town of Trion Business Office, Recreation Department, Gas Department, and Maintenance Department will be closed on Monday, January 15, 2024, for MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY. Garbage normally picked up on Monday will be picked up on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. All other days will be on a regular schedule. For any emergency calls for the Gas Department or Police Department call 911 and they will contact the proper person.
