Former U.S. Rep. Doug Collins will head the new Georgia chapter of the America First Policy Institute, a national think tank, the organization announced this week.
The Georgia FFA Association’s success at the 96th National FFA Convention was highlighted by 12 national champions. Among Georgia’s national winners were five national proficiency award winners, three national Agriscience Fair award winners, and four national Career Development Event (CDE) and Leadership Development Event (LDE) winners.

A Cherokee County, Alabama jury has found a Rome, Georgia man guilty of murder. The jury returned the verdict against Desmond Brown on Tuesday afternoon. Brown was found guilty of capital murder for the killing of half-sisters Truveniea Campbell and Vanita Richardson in Alabama and dumping their bodies near a bridge on the Etowah River in Floyd County.
The Chattooga Lodge will be selling BBQ plates this Saturday, November 25th at the Fit Pit parking lot. BBQ plates will be $10 or $5 for a sandwich.
A Northwest Georgia motorcycle club has raised thousands of dollars for the Toys for Tots program to help out children at Christmas. Freedom Seekers is a club of motorcycle riders that is based out of Rome, Georgia but has a club site at Cloudland on Highway 48 in Chattooga County, near the state line. Over the past weekend the Freedom Seekers delivered a check totaling $16,000 to the Toys for Tots program in Rome that serves children in Floyd, Polk and Chattooga Counties. The Freedom Seekers hosted their 27th Annual Toys for Tots Toy Run this past weekend in Cave Spring. Club members say that the annual drive to raise money for kids in need at Christmastime has grown each year.
A thirty-nine-year-old registered sex offender was arrested this week for probation violation charges. Roy Sanford Price, whose address is listed as Rocky Hollow Road in Summerville, was convicted of enticing a child for indecent purposes and child molestation in February of 2014. Price was arrested and booked into the Chattooga County Jail on Monday night, shortly before midnight, for violating the terms of his probation.
Summerville Police were called about a disturbance on West Washington Street on Sunday afternoon. When police arrived on the scene, they found Brittany Sturgeon standing in the roadway. Sturgeon told the responding officer that her boyfriend, Matthew Mullican, had struck her numerous times. When officers spoke with Mullican, he said that he and Sturgeon had been drinking and started arguing about another woman. Sturgeon then reportedly locked Mullican out of the bedroom and he then knocked the door in. At that point, Sturgeon allegedly struck Mullican and he struck her back. Police determined that both parties were at fault and arrested both, charging them with disorderly conduct.
A thirty-three-year-old Summerville woman was arrested in Rome and jailed on Monday after violating a court order to stay away from her wife. According to reports, Heather Leann Holt was accused of stalking her estranged wife on Venetian Way in Rome. The court order came from a previous altercation in which Holt was accused of hitting her wife with a closed fist during a dispute. She then reportedly tossed the other woman’s cell phone out of a moving vehicle, causing it to shatter. Holt was charged with battery and criminal damage to property in connection with the earlier incident. This week, Holt was charged with aggravated stalking.
