


A former Floyd County resident who now lives in Inkster, Michigan was arrested last week in Rome after reports said he allegedly purchased a cat from a Rome pet store and then proceeded to burn it alive several hours later. Reports added that on the same day, thirty-year-old Zachary Ky Murphy allegedly threw a fake pipe bomb into Alpha Smoke Shop on Turner McCall Blvd. Murphy is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, terroristic threats and acts and hoax devices.

Once in a Super Blue Moon James H. “Sloppy” Sloppy State Park has a Guided Night Hike. The event will take place on Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 8 PM. The guided tour will start at the visitor center and will end up at the Lower Lake Trail where attendees can watch the Super Blue Moon from the Lower Lake Dam. The Summerville City Council will hold their regular monthly meeting for August coming up tomorrow evening, Monday, August 14 at 5 PM at Summerville City Hall. On the agenda for tomorrow’s meeting, the council will be asked to approve purchases for the water treatment plant and the public works department. One of the items the public works department is looking to purchase is a Polaris Ranger utility vehicle from Easy Living Yamaha in Rome at a cost of $15,109.08. Tomorrow’s evening is open to the public and the public is invited to attend.

A Floyd County teenager was arrested on a felony count of cruelty to animals after allegedly shooting and killing a cat and then using the animal for target practice.

Lt. Cmdr. Emily Barrale, a native of Rome, Georgia, serves with Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VR) 51, stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
Barrale, a 2005 graduate of Armuchee High School, graduated from the Naval Academy in 2009. Barrale joined the Navy 14 years ago. “I joined the Navy because I wanted to fly aircraft,” said Barrale. “I fell in love with flying when I was 16 and knew how expensive it was to become a pilot as a civilian because I worked at a flight school. My Uncle Bob is an Air Force veteran and he guided me on my path to becoming a pilot in the Navy.”
