Fire At Mount Vernon Warehouse Friday

Trion firefighters responded to a call about a fire at a warehouse at Mount Vernon Mills on Friday.  According to the Trion Fire Department, upon arrival, firefighters from Trion, Summerville and Hays Correctional found an area approximately 30,000 square feet with little visibility due to smoke. Shortly after arrival, firefighters located the issue and extinguished the fire. Firefighters remained on the scene for four hours extinguishing hot spots and ventilating the building.  Trion Fire Department said, “We are very thankful for our firefighters as well as Summerville and Hays Fire. Outstanding teamwork”.

EBT Card Fraud Reported

A Summerville man reported a case of EBT (food stamp) card fraud to the Summerville Police Department last week.  The man told a responding officer that he had used his EBT card at the Dollar General Store on Commerce Street earlier in the day.  Later that day, he found that his account was wiped out.  The man believed that someone had stolen the information from his card and used it.  Food stamp card fraud is all to common and the Georgia Department of Human Services has a hotline set up to report fraud or food stamp card abuse at 1-844-694-2347.

Duck Derby Returning To Downtown Summerville

The Ducky Derby will be returning to downtown Summerville once again this year.  Summerville Main Street has set the date for Saturday, May 13th.  Race time will be at 1 Pm and their will be a cruise-in with North Georgia Cruisers from 10 AM – 2 PM.  There will be a Ducky Derby Hat Contest with a $50 first place prize in adult and youth divisions.  The event will also include arts and crafts, entertainment, food vendors and children’s activities.  Mark the date – the Ducky Derby will be taking place May 13th.

Log Truck Accident In Menlo On Friday

A log truck wrecked at the intersection of Georgia Highway 48 and Highway 337 in Menlo on Friday afternoon at the four-way stop.  The single-vehicle accident caused traffic to be rerouted.  Busses coming to and from Menlo Elementary School, along with parents coming to pick up their children on Friday afternoon, had to use alternate routes.  The Georgia State Patrol is still investigating the accident, but there were no injuries reported.

Property Tax Relief Bill Passes

The Georgia General Assembly passed a Property Tax Relief Grant program funding that was included in House Bill 18, the Amended Fiscal Year 2023 (AFY 2023) budget. Proposed by Governor Brian Kemp, this program will provide every eligible Georgia homeowner a chance to receive an $18,000 exemption for their assessed home value on their 2023 property tax bill.
