Chattooga Unemployment Rate Down From January

The unemployment rate in Chattooga County was down in February, compared to unemployment numbers in January, but was higher than this time last year.  The Georgia Department of Labor released the latest unemployment numbers on Thursday that show Chattooga County with an unemployment rate of 4.2%.  For the Northwest Georgia region, the unemployment rate was 3.3% for February, compared to 3.1% in February of 2022.  However, the number of employed residents was up 3,055 from January and up 4,812 from February 2022 to 420,418, another record.

Summerville Police Find Trailer

On Monday of this week a man called the Summerville Police Department to report a stolen trailer.  He told police that he had gone to pick up a refrigerator on Highway 114 and when he turned on Union Street in Summerville, he discovered that the trailer was not behind the tow vehicle.  He went back and searched for the trailer that had come loose from his vehicle, but was unable to locate it and assumed someone had stolen it.  Summerville Police retraced the man’s route and found the trailer, and the refrigerator near Mason’s Funeral Home on Highway 48.

Drug Task Force Seized Vehicle Auction Next Week

Bipartisan Insulin Cap Bill Co-Sponsored By Georgia U.S. Senator

Sens. John Kennedy (R-La.) and Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) have introduced the bipartisan Affordable Insulin Now Act of 2023 to cap the price of insulin for all patients, including those who are uninsured, at $35 for a 30-day supply.

Chattooga County Mobile Home Tax Deadline Extended

Normally, mobile home taxes are due in Georgia on April 1st, but because of a delay in printing the bills, the tax deadline for mobile home taxes in Chattooga County is being extended to April 11, 2023, according to Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton. Although the tax commissioner’s name is on the bill, it is the tax assessors office that sets the value of mobile homes.  If you have sold a mobile home over the past year and you received a bill in the mail this year, you need to contact the Chattooga County Tax Assessors Office at 706-857-0737. The office is located in the Chattooga County Courthouse Annex, across the hall from the tax commissioner’s office.

Gun Threat Discredited By Dade County Sheriff’s Office

A gun threat at the Dade County Middle School on Monday of this week caught the attention of the school’s resource officer.  According to the Dade County Sheriff’s Office, a student stated he was going to bring a gun to school on Friday. Subsequently, other students heard this statement and began repeating it and telling students not to come to school on Friday.
