2023 Food Preservation Workshops

Chattooga County Extension Agent Rebecca Thomas has released the schedule for the 2023 Chattooga County Food Preservation Workshops.  Workshops will cover a variety of home canning and food preservation topics.  The cost is $25 per class and is limited to 15 people per class.  Payment will secure your registration.  You may register by calling the Chattooga County Extension Office at 706-857-0744 or by emailing Rebecca Thomas at rbt@uga.edu.  The workshops will all be held at the Extension Office / Chattooga County Ag Building at 40 Middle School Road in Summerville.

Man Suspects Woman He Picked Up In Dalton Stole His Jeep Liberty

The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a stolen vehicle on Thursday of last week.  Deputies went to Dry Creek Road to speak with the complainant, identified as Raymond McHan.  Mr. McHan told deputies that he had picked up a woman in Dalton on March 18th and that she had been staying with him, because she “needed a place to stay”.  On Thursday, while Mr. McHan was in the shower, his 2012 Jeep Liberty – and the woman he picked up in Dalton – were both gone when he came out of the bathroom.  Mr. McHan suspected the woman might go back to Dalton, but was not sure.  The incident was turned over to an investigator with the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office.  The Jeep has a tag number of “YFX622” and has been listed as stolen.

Rep. Lumsden Weekly Legislative Report

State Rep. Eddie Lumsden (R-Armuchee) has released his weekly legislative report.  One key bill mentioned deals with ex-offenders coming out of Georgia’s prison system.  Rep. Lumsden said that bipartisan legislation was passed that would allow ex-offenders to obtain a state-issued ID that looks just like any other ID to avoid ” any stigmatizing information about their status as a past offender”.  The bill would also allow ex-inmates to easily obtain documentation from the Department of Corrections if they have achieved their high school equivalency or any other educational or work related achievements through job training.  You can read Rep. Major Gen. Carden & Commissioner Ross To Speak At Veterans Event Today

Today is National Vietnam War Veterans Day and an event is planned at the Chattooga County Civic Center at noon to honor area Vietnam veterans.  Also, there will be an honor ceremony for 48 local veterans.  The Adjunct General of the Georgia National Guard Major General Thomas Carden will be speaking, along with Georgia Commissioner of Veterans Services Patricia Ross.

Burglary On Farrar Drive In Summerville

The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a burglary on Farrar Drive in Summerville on Thursday of last week.  According to a report released on Tuesday, a responding deputy spoke with the complainant who said she was moving from the house and hadn’t been there since the previous Monday.  When she came back to retrieve some additional items, she noticed that the back door had been broken into.  A car jack was found sitting in the floor inside the residence. The woman reported a backpack was stolen that contained several personal items as well as a jar of change.  Also, three plastic totes were missing.  The incident was turned over to an investigator with the sheriff’s office.

Intoxicated Man Arrested For Discharging A Firearm

A Trion man was arrested on Tuesday night around 9 PM after he discharged a gun in a residential neighborhood.  According to a report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, forty-eight-year-old Jason Gray of an Adams Drive address told a responding deputy that he had shot a 9mm pistol after he “thought he saw someone with a flashlight” in a wooded area near the residence.  Gray admitted to officers that he never saw anyone but decided to fire the gun as a warning.   Gray showed the deputies the empty shell casings on the ground.  Deputies say that Gray was intoxicated at the time of the incident.  No one, and no structures were harmed from the incident.  Gray was charged with discharging a firearm while under the influence of alcohol.
