Tonight, showers and a thunderstorm are likely before 11 p.m., followed by showers and thunderstorms likely between 11 p.m. and midnight. Patchy fog is expected after 1 a.m. The low will be around 64 degrees with calm winds. There is a 70% chance of precipitation, with similar rainfall amounts expected as today. The unsettled weather pattern is expected to continue into Memorial Day, with a 70% chance of precipitation and the possibility of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. Monday night carries an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms. The forecast for Tuesday predicts an 80% chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm, with a high near 74. Tuesday night will also see a high chance (90%) of showers and possible thunderstorms. The wet weather is expected to linger into Wednesday, with a 70% chance of showers and possible thunderstorms throughout the day.

A 29-year-old Armuchee man is behind bars facing a slew of charges after allegedly stealing a firearm and a vehicle from a residence on Old Summerville Road last month. Dakota Joseph Godfrey was arrested and charged with felony burglary, auto theft, possession of a pistol during the commission of a crime, and criminal damage to property, according to Floyd County Jail reports. Authorities allege Godfrey caused over $1,500 in damage to the garage door of the victim’s home during the March 26th incident. In addition to the aforementioned charges, Godfrey faces counts of felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, misdemeanor criminal trespass, and theft by taking. Police reports indicate the stolen items included a Ruger Mark II pistol and a Honda CR-V valued at $1,600. As of Friday, Godfrey remains in jail without bond.

State and local law enforcement officers urge everyone to “Join the Click” by wearing seat belts in vehicles and life jackets on the water this Memorial Day Weekend. The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) and others are on a statewide safety tour during the holiday travel period. More than a million people are expected to travel this weekend, prompting reminders to wear seat belts and life jackets and avoid impaired driving. During last year’s holiday weekend, 16 people died in traffic crashes. Law enforcement will enforce traffic laws and conduct vessel safety checks. Key reminders include allowing extra travel time and designating sober drivers before celebrations.

The Walker County Board of Commissioners will be holding public budget work sessions on Thursday, June 2nd, and Friday, June 3rd, 2023, beginning at 9:00 a.m. each day. The sessions will be held at 101 S Duke Street in LaFayette, allowing for public access. For those unable to attend in person, the county will be live-streaming the sessions on its official Facebook page. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp lauded Georgia Power’s recent commitment to freeze base rates for the next three years, stating the move will benefit both residential customers and significantly strengthen the state’s appeal for new businesses and investment. “This is good news for Georgia,” Kemp declared at a press conference held at the State Capitol on Wednesday, May 21st. “Georgia’s going to be in a great place.” The governor’s endorsement came alongside the appearance of two Public Service Commissioners, just two days after Georgia Power and the PSC’s Public Interest Advocacy Staff revealed an agreement to maintain current base rates through 2028. This proposed agreement, which is pending approval from the Public Service Commission, would also negate the need for the rate case that Georgia Power had been scheduled to file by July 1st. While the agreement is being praised, it follows a period of rising electricity costs for Georgia residents. Georgia Power has implemented three rate increases over the last three years, driven in part by the surge in electricity demand associated with the rapid expansion of data centers across the state. The rate freeze aims to provide stability and predictability for both consumers and businesses amidst this growing demand.
