Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s (GNTC) Office of Adult Education held its Fall 2024 Graduation Ceremony on Dec. 12 for students who have earned their High School Equivalency diplomas.
The Trion Town Council will be holding their final meeting of the year this evening at 6 PM. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Peachtree City has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for Northwest Georgia, including Chattooga, Walker, Floyd, and Gordon Counties, effective until 9 AM EST. This advisory warns residents about hazardous driving conditions due to limited visibility, which could drop to half a mile or less. The NWS advises drivers to slow down, use headlights, and maintain distance. Residents should stay informed and take precautions while traveling. Safety is the priority until the fog clears.

Summerville Police were called to investigate a stolen U-Haul vehicle that was reported yesterday. According to a report, Judy’s Herb Shop reported that a person identified as Makayla Mitchell had rented the truck on November 29th and had not returned the vehicle. Summerville police investigated and found that Mitchell’s license had been suspended. After contacting Mitchell’s family, police determined that Mitchell was last known to be in the Atlanta area. The truck, a 2021 Ford E450, was listed as stolen in the statewide database.
Several Chattooga County Constitutional officers were sworn in on Tuesday for their terms that start on January 1, 2025. Newly-elected Coroner Jeremy McElhaney and Chattooga County School Board member Chad Dodd were sworn if for their first term in office. Probate Judge Gary Woods also swore in Sheriff Mark Schrader and Magistrate Judge Tracy Maddox, along with Deputy Tax Commissioner Glori Boyd. Judge Woods was sworn in by Superior Court Judge Don Thompson.
A stolen vehicle investigation led to a chase and arrest on Monday afternoon, as reported by Cherokee County, Alabama Sheriff Jeff Shaver. The incident began when a 911 call alerted authorities to a stolen 2011 Honda Accord taken from Coheley’s Body Shop in Centre. Law enforcement quickly issued a Be On the Look Out (BOLO) alert for the stolen vehicle. Deputies, acting on the alert, spotted the Honda Accord on County Road 63 in the Sand Valley area shortly after. When officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver, later identified as 20-year-old Christopher Lee of Leesburg, refused to comply, prompting a pursuit. The chase continued along Highway 9 toward Cedar Bluff, where the driver ultimately lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road. Law enforcement apprehended Lee at the scene without further incident. He now faces multiple charges, including first-degree theft of property, first-degree criminal mischief, unlawful possession of marijuana, and attempting to elude police. Lee was subsequently transported to the Cherokee County Detention Center.
On Monday of this week, Cristi Maples reported a theft while at Farmers Furniture in Summerville. At 4:11 PM, she found her wallet stolen from her parked vehicle in the parking lot, near Autozone. She had recently used her debit card, which was left inside the wallet, and received an alert about someone named “Kyle” trying to use it for a PayPal transfer. Maples reported the theft to authorities and contacted her bank, finding no further transactions. Her lost wallet contained $400 in cash, her driver’s license, credit cards, social security card, and more. Summerville Police were checking security cameras at Autozone and George’s Quik Stop to see if there was any footage of the thief.
