Summerville Main Street will host a Trains & Tracks Expo at the Historic Summerville Depot on Saturday and Sunday, November 2-3. Hours of operation for the event on Saturday, November 2 will be 10:00 am-3:00 pm and Sunday, November 3 from 11:00am-3:00pm. Admission is free to the public. Toys for Tots is gearing up to bring holiday cheer to children in need with their upcoming registration for Christmas toys. Families are invited to sign up for assistance on two designated dates: Saturday, October 19, 2024, and Saturday, November 9, 2024. The registration will take place at the Summerville Recreation Center, located on Bolling Rd. in Summerville, Georgia, from 9:00 AM until 12:00 noon. This initiative aims to ensure that children living in households with financial challenges receive gifts during the holiday season. Parents and guardians should note that the last day to sign up for toys is November 25, 2024. Sign-ups are limited to children who reside in your home and for whom you have custody, so make sure to bring the necessary documentation. Tuesday, October 29th marked the sixteenth day of Early Voting for the November 5th Presidential Election. On Tuesday, Georgia voters broke the 3 million mark for in-person Early Voting turnout – unprecedented in Georgia history. As of Tuesday at 3:30pm, total turnout surpassed the 3.2 Million mark, and 3 Million for Early Voting with 3,009,204 check-ins, shattering previous Early Voting performance.

The City of Summerville will conduct a public hearing tomorrow, October 31, 2024, at 12:00 PM at City Hall regarding the approved activities of the City’s FY2024 Community Development Block Grant, which received $1,000,000. Topics to be discussed include funds allocation, assistance for low and moderate-income individuals, plans to minimize displacement, Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity Requirements, Section 3 Requirements, and a commitment to equal access regardless of various factors. The public is encouraged to attend to learn more about the project activities. On Tuesday, the Metro Atlanta Skills Challenge, a premier workforce development event organized by The Associated General Contractors of Georgia (AGC Georgia),  was held and showcased the remarkable skills of high school students enrolled in construction programs across the region.  Chattooga High School’s CTAE welding and construction teams competed and were named “Overall Winner” of the regional event.

A domestic dispute last Saturday resulted in police intervention and the arrest of sixty-two-year old Willie Perry of Trion. Summerville Police were called to a residence on Woodland Avenue where a woman reported a heated argument with her boyfriend, Willie Perry. The woman’s son, alleged that Perry confronted him with a knife. Perry claimed self-defense, stating the son had aggressively rushed him. Despite conflicting statements, Perry was allowed to return to his motel due to delays in verifying an active warrant our of Canton, Georgia for his arrest. However, he was later located and taken into custody by Trion Police and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.

Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s (GNTC) Law Enforcement Academy equips students with the knowledge and skills for a fulfilling career in law enforcement, a high-demand profession in Georgia. The academy, located at the Gordon County Campus in Calhoun, offers Basic POST (Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council) Certification, Intermediate Law Enforcement, and Advanced Law Enforcement certificates. Open to both law enforcement professionals and those seeking a career change, the academy first opened its doors in 2009.

A 29-year-old inmate at the Floyd County Jail is facing felony charges following an unusual incident involving a toilet late last week. Jonathan Eugene Sutton, a resident of Centre, Alabama, has been charged with interference with government property after allegedly dismantling a commode in his jail cell. According to jail records, Sutton managed to remove the toilet from the wall, prompting authorities to take immediate action. The circumstances surrounding his actions remain unclear, but the incident has raised concerns regarding inmate behavior and facility security. Sutton has been incarcerated since April, after his arrest for allegedly using a metal pipe to vandalize a woman’s vehicle by bashing out its headlights. His ongoing legal troubles have now escalated with the addition of this new charge. Sutton is also being held on behalf of Polk County authorities.

Thirty years ago, the idea of designating Little River Canyon as a unit of the National Park Service seemed far-fetched to many. With a significant portion of the land owned by Alabama Power Company, and various smaller parcels scattered across DeKalb and Cherokee counties, the task appeared insurmountable.
