A legislative study committee recently recommended that the state actively promote sustainable aviation fuel and mass timber construction to help the struggling timber industry in Georgia. Despite being the top state for forestry in the country, the industry is facing challenges due to shrinking demand and oversupply. Sustainable aviation fuel, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly, is seen as a promising market for the industry. The European Union has mandated the use of SAF in commercial aircraft by 2030. The committee also recommended supporting a Georgia-based research facility to develop innovative forestry markets, including SAF. Additionally, the use of mass timber in construction as an alternative to concrete and steel was suggested. The report also calls for a study to promote the pulp-and-paper industry and identify burdensome regulations hurting the timber industry. The recommendations will be considered by the full Senate in 2025.

An off-duty Summerville Police officer noticed suspicious activity that led to a drug arrest last week in the parking lot of the Fit Pit gym. Officer Ty Hutchins observed a white female driver and a male passenger acting suspiciously in a white Toyota sedan. Officer Pledger joined Hutchins and saw John Reid, known for drug offenses, get into the vehicle, which drove off and was stopped by a Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputy. Inside were Lisa Barker, John Reid, and Teresa Reid. A search found methamphetamine in the car, with John initially claiming ownership but Teresa admitting it was hers. Lisa Barker, showing signs of drug impairment, failed sobriety tests and was arrested for driving under the influence. She consented to a blood test but faced difficulties due to dehydration during the process. All three individuals now face charges in connection with drug possession and distribution.

Once political ads stopped, retailers began energetically promoting the holiday shopping season. Santas appeared in malls, Target stocked up on “Wicked”-themed items for the upcoming movie, and discounts that began in October continued. This year, Thanksgiving is late, making the crucial holiday shopping period shorter by six days. The coming weeks, highlighted by Black Friday and Cyber Monday, are especially significant for retailers of all sizes.

Here is the latest arrest report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office for Tuesday, November 19, 2024:

According to the Georgia Farm Bureau, the average cost of a Thanksgiving dinner for ten people in 2023 was estimated at $61.17. This figure reflects a slight decrease from the record-high average of $64.05 experienced in 2022. As Georgia residents prepare for the holiday season, the cost of traditional feasts seems to have stabilized, despite ongoing grocery price spikes and inflation that have affected various sectors across the nation. However, experts caution that the price of Thanksgiving meals in 2024 could rise again due to persistent inflation and fluctuating food prices.

Earlier this month, on Highway 48, Summerville Police stopped a red 2006 Jeep Wrangler that was reported stolen. The vehicle belonged to David Hughes and was being driven by Leslie Bishop. Police confirmed the vehicle was stolen with 911 dispatch and initiated a traffic stop. Bishop initially claimed she borrowed the vehicle but later admitted to stealing it. A search of the Jeep revealed a burnt rolled cigarette suspected to contain marijuana, personal belongings of Bishop, and confirmation from Sgt. Rogers that the Jeep was reported stolen. Brandi Thompson, Hughes’s daughter, shared her struggles to retrieve the vehicle from Bishop, who she said had been avoiding contact. Hughes decided to press charges, and Bishop was arrested for theft by receiving stolen property, given the Jeep’s value exceeding $5,000. Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived at the scene, and Bishop was taken into custody.
