Summerville Mayor Harry Harvey says that the city council is kicking the can down the road, so to speak, after they turned down the mayor’s plans to being implementation of a property tax for Summerville property owners.  For many years, revenues from the gas department have buoyed the city’s bottom line and allowed the city to give their property owners a break.  Other municipalities in the county charge a property tax on top of the county property tax.  The council firmly rejected the mayor’s plans at a meeting held this past week.  According the Georgia Public Policy Foundation, more and more municipalities across the state are beginning to asses property taxes to make up for declining revenues. Add to that, politicians who are eager to take advantage of rapidly rising housing valuations across the state.  Georgia’s constitution says that any municipality in the state can collect property tax.
