Georgia Farm Bureau members who grow any variety of dry Bermudagrass hay have until Oct. 31 to enter the organization’s 33rd Annual Quality Bermudagrass Hay Contest. The contest winner will receive the free use of a Vermeer mower-conditioner for one year. The winner will have the option to buy the equipment at a reduced price at the end of that year. This is the 26th year that Vermeer has sponsored GFB’s hay contest.
Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader says that his office is collaborating with the Masonic Lodges of Chattooga County to offer the Georgia Child Identification Program, (GA CHIP) and the initiative will kick off next week during the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair.
Smokey Bear, the iconic symbol of wildfire prevention, is celebrated his 80th birthday last Friday, August 9th. Smokey made his debut on a 1944 wildfire prevention poster, impacting American conservation efforts ever since.
Saturday was the deadline to register for fall sports at the Trion Recreation Department. If you missed the deadline, late registrations are being accepted until August 17th. The Chattooga County Farm Bureau will once again this year be sponsoring the Demonstration Kitchen at the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair that is happening next week. Each day, the kitchen will be open for demonstrations of a wide variety of skills by local artisans, chefs, gardeners and experts. This year, the demonstrations will feature salve making, bees wax candles and goat milk soap, bouquet arranging, chair seat weaving, herbal lemonade making, homemade vanilla extract and a horticulture program. You can see the times and dates for all of the demonstrations below. The demonstration kitchen is free with the purchase of a $5 gate pass to the fair.
The Summerville City Council will hold their regular meeting for the month of August coming up this evening at 5 PM at Summerville City Hall. On the agenda tonight, the council will be discussing authorizing Mayor Harry Harvey to start the process of implementing a city property tax. Also, the council will be awarding several bids in relation to the new public works building that is being constructed adjacent to the Summerville Industrial Park. The council is also expected to appoint Council Member Simone Adams to the Summerville Main Street Board of Directors and will also be considering several mobile home requests. The meeting gets underway at 5 PM and will be preceded by a question and answer session with the mayor and council members at 4:30 PM. The public is invited to attend.

A Georgia senator and congressman are working together to pass a new act they believe will benefit Georgia family farmers. Earlier this week, Sen. Jon Ossoff and Rep. Sanford Bishop, both Georgia Democrats, introduced the Protecting our Produce Act.
The Summerville City Council will hold their August meeting coming up tomorrow evening at Summerville City Hall. The council is expected to approve the winning bids for work that is being done at the new city public works facility being constructed near the Summerville Industrial Park. Bills Heating and Cooling was the winning bid for the heating and cooling work at the building and Chamlee Electric was the winning bid for electrical work. Also, the city council is expected to approve the purchase of two new backhoes from Chattanooga Tractor. In other business, the council is expected to approve City Council Member Simone Adams as a member of the Summerville Main Street Board of Directors. The meeting will be held at 5 PM and the public is invited to attend.
Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry is seeking bids for work to be done at the Chattooga County Transfer Station, located off Stockade Road in Summerville. The work includes concrete work and replacing metal at the facility. Bids on the projects are due at the Commissioner’s Office, located at 10102 Commerce Street in Summerville by 10 AM, Tuesday, August 13th.
