Designations for the economic health of counties throughout the Appalachian Region were released this past week by the Appalachian Regional Commission. Just seventy-seven counties in the Appalachian Region were designated as “economically distressed”. Chattooga County was the only county in Georgia to receive the designation.

A federal judge on Friday sentenced former Georgia Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine to serve three-and-a-half years in prison after Oxendine pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud.

A fifty-nine-year-old Summerville man was arrested earlier this month after driving into a parked car in the lot of Pay-N-Tote in Summerville. According to Summerville Police, Stephen Duane Shaver ran into the other vehicle and then left the scene. He then drove to his residence on Congress Street. Police arrested Shaver and charged him with hit and run and leaving the scene of an accident. He was additionally charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
From 1947 -1980 the Tooga Theatre was on a thriving block downtown as shown in this late 50s Rodeo Parade picture. The history of the Tooga and plans for a possible rebirth as a place for community events will be the subject of the their meeting today at 2 PM at the historic Summerville Depot, located on East Washington Street in Summerville. Meetings of the Chattooga County Historical Society are free and open to the public.

The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating reports of severe illnesses associated with Diamond Shruumz-brand chocolate bars, cones, and gummies.
On July 5th, Joseph Maddox told Summerville Police that a white male was on his property without permission. Maddox said he confronted the man and told him to leave and that the male demanded to see a woman he believed resided there. Maddox stated that he knew the woman but that she didn’t live there. The male then became angry and knocked out the front porch screen door, hit Maddox in the nose, knocked his wheelchair over on the porch and punched the glass window out. All of this was recorded on video that the police later saw. Maddox gave a good description of the male and vehicle that he left in.
