Georgia is not in the path of the total eclipse that will be happening this afternoon, but a partial eclipse will be evident around 1:45 this afternoon. However, our part of the state will see more of the eclipse than anywhere else in the Peach State.
A former resident of Chattooga County that now lives in DeKalb County, Alabama has been indicted by the Chattooga County Grand Jury on charges of child molestation.
Trion High School cheer tryouts will be held later this month. Andria Queen is the new head cheer coach at Trion High School. Queen is a graduate of Trion High School and has been teaching at Gilbert Elementary School in Walker County. She will be teaching at Trion Elementary School starting in the 2024-2025 school year in addition to her position as cheer coach. Tryouts for high school cheer leading at Trion High School will be held starting one week from today, from April 15-April 19.
The Summerville City Council will hold their regular monthly meeting for the month of April coming up this evening at 5 PM at Summerville City Hall. There will be a question and answer session with Summerville Mayor Harry Harvey and the Summerville City Council at 4:30 PM, prior to this evening’s meeting. The public is invited to attend. The council will be looking to award the bid for the 2024 Celebrate Independence fireworks display to Parker Systems. Also on the agenda for tonight’s meeting the council will be looking to adopt rules for the Summerville Cemetery and consider amending the city manager’s contract. Walker County residents will have the opportunity to participate in a community clean-up effort in advance of Earth Day, as the county’s popular Retire Your Tires Amnesty Day event returns. On Saturday, April 20th, Walker County will accept tires free of charge from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Walker County Landfill, 5120 N Marble Top Road, Chickamauga and at the Rossville Public Works building, 200 Ellis Road, Rossville.
If you have a child that needs to be enrolled in Kindergarten in the Chattooga County School System, you will have an opportunity to get them registered for the 2024-2025 school year coming up on Thursday of this week.
On Friday of last week, Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader released a statement about a horrendous case of child neglect in Chattooga County. A couple have been jailed after the sheriff’s department investigated the severe chase of child neglect.
The GBI has arrested and charged Owen Thomas, age 39, of Lithonia, GA, with Sexual Assault Against Person in Custody and Violation of Oath by Public Officer.
The Chattooga County Tax Assessors office continues to work through a mountain of tax appeals from 2023. The historic number of tax appeals has meant that local government agencies that rely on the property taxes are seeing money come to them at a slower pace than usual. In normal years, taxes are due the first of December, but 2023 taxes were not due until March 1, 2024, and as of about a week ago, only 60% of 2023 property taxes had been collected. There are still around 1,000 tax appeals out there that have to be settled. Property owners whose taxes are still under appeal don’t have to pay taxes until their appeal is settled.
