Two Republicans running for Chattooga County Sole Commissioner will be holding separate campaign events coming up this weekend. Incumbent Commissioner Blake Elsberry is planning a meet and greet and fundraiser and challenger Andy Allen will be set up at the Spring Market at Dowdy Park to meet with supporters and potential voters.
A man serving a life term in a Georgia state prison has been indicted on charges of constructing and mailing bombs to two federal buildings.

That’s a question that the US Census Bureau is attempting to answer with the recent Community Resilience Estimates that report on how communities across the nation would do if faced with a disaster such as a natural or man-made disaster or pandemic.

Summerville’s Downtown Runway show will be held on Friday, April 12, at 8 PM on East Washington Street. All proceeds will benefit the Diane Marie Jones Memorial Scholarship Fund, a 501c3 nonprofit organization established in 2021 in honor of Diane Marie Jones. The young lady that raises the most money will receive a special prize and recognition on stage the night of the runway show.
Initial filings for unemployment benefits in Georgia dropped last week compared with the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday. New jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, fell to 3,344 in the week ending March 30, down from 4,447 the week before, the Labor Department said. U.S. unemployment claims rose to 221,000 last week, up 9,000 claims from 212,000 the week prior on a seasonally adjusted basis. Iowa saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims jumping by 97.8%. Virgin Islands, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage drop in new claims, with claims dropping by 50%.

The Summerville City Council is looking to award the bid for the 2024 Celebrate Independence Fireworks show to Parker Systems of Summerville. David Parker’s company has provided the pyrotechnics for the event each year. According to an agenda for tomorrow evening’s Summerville City Council meeting, the city will spend $22,000 on the fireworks show this year. All of the money that is spent for the annual show is raised by sponsorship sold to local businesses and industry in Chattooga County. Also their will be a concert at the event. It was announced this past week that Babe’s Bayou will be the headliner for Celebrate Independence, scheduled for July 3rd at the Chattooga County Ag Building.
