The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office was called to the Waffle House in Summerville shortly after 1 AM about an incident of theft on March 10th. According to Waffle House employees, a group of teens and an adult skipped out on a $53.50 bill, leaving the restaurant without paying. One of the teens had filled out an employment application with a Rose Circle address. The responding deputy went to the address but was unable to locate anyone. The application had two phone numbers which proved to be unworkable numbers. Waffle House employees said that the store manager might want to press charges in relation to the theft.
A Chattooga County Deputy responded to a call about social media bullying and blackmail. According to the report from the sheriff’s office, a Chattooga County man told the deputy that his son had befriended, what he thought was a girl his age, on Snapchat. It turns out, that the person was not who they claimed to be and began to threaten the man’s son saying if he did not pay $300, explicit videos would be posted. The complainant had told his son to block the person on social media, which the child had done. The deputy advised that a report would be made about the blackmail attempt.
A tryout for middle school cheerleading will be held March 27, 28 and 29 at Leroy Massey Elementary School. The tryouts will be from after school is released until 6 PM each evening. Any Chattooga County School System student who will be in the 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th grade during the 2024-2024 school year may try out. The student must have a current physical, two teacher recommendation forms from a math and reading teacher and fill out the cheer interest form.

Jerry Joseph Southern, a Northwest Georgia convicted sex offender, was sentenced this week to ten years of imprisonment for possessing thousands of digital images and videos depicting the rape and sexual abuse of children, including prepubescent minors under the age of 12.
A forty-seven-year-old Chattooga County sex offender will be serving six months in jail after failing to register for a sex offender treatment program. Roger Dale Galloway, who was originally sentenced in 2013 for enticing a child for indecent purposes, also failed to complete a substance abuse program. Galloway was sentenced to the six-month jail term in Chattooga County Superior Court. According to the Georgia Sex Offender registry, Galloway’s residence was verified on March 1st of this year and lists him living at 4210 Trion-Teloga Road, Summerville.
A prisoner at Hays State Prison who would have been eligible to be released in December of last year will now be serving an additional four years in prison after he was found guilty of assault in connection with an incident at the prison. Zackery William Hurt, age 35, was first sentenced to prison in 2016. He was serving time in relation to burglary, theft, arson and theft of motor vehicle charges at the time of the assault on another inmate at the prison, located in Chattooga County. Hurt pleaded guilty to the assault charges in Chattooga County Superior Court.
