A special election will be held to fill the unexpired term of former City Councilman David Ford who passed away earlier this month. At this past week’s Summerville City Council meeting, city attorney Albert Palmour said that the election would be held on May 21st – the same day as the General Election Primary. The city has yet to announce details about qualifying for the seat. Ford had served on the Summerville City Council since 2011.

A thirty-one-year-old Armuchee area man has been charged with theft after he took items from a home after learning that the person living their had passed away. Floyd County Police jailed Toby Lance Eden after he allegedly stole a pool table and a saltwater pool system from the home of the deceased victim. Police say that he sold the pool table and the saltwater pool system, which alerted police to the theft. Eden was charged with felony theft, theft by taking and theft by deception.
Drama continues to dominate Menlo City politics. Earlier this week two councilmembers walked out of a city council meeting. One reportedly uttered “I resign”, however Menlo Mayor Allan Keen told the local newspaper that no one has submitted a resignation to him. The drama is in the wake of the city’s water department head resigning, followed by the resignation of Menlo City Clerk Jill Neal. Neal told WZQZ News that she had another job lined up after she left the city, but Mayor Keen is holding out hope that the city can talk her into coming back to work. In the meantime, the city continues to incur fines for every day there is not someone with a license at the helm of the water treatment facility. Mayor Keen says that there have been some applicants for the position, but as of this week, no one has been hired.
