Here is the latest arrest report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office for Thursday, March 7, 2024:
The Chattooga County Registrars Office has issued 76 Absentee by Mail ballots, accepted 49 Absentee by Mail ballots, rejected 1 Absentee by Mail ballot (it may be cured), and cancelled 1 Absentee by Mail ballot. Absentee by Mail ballots have until 7 pm on March 12 to be received by the Registrars Office. Additionally, there have been 1068 ballots cast during Advance Voting for the March 12, 2024 Presidential Preference Primary so far. There are still 2 days left of Advance Voting. There have not been any provisional ballots.
A thirty-five-year-old Summerville man was arrested on Tuesday of this week after a traffic stop by Summerville Police. Police say that the vehicle the subject was driving on Bellah Avenue did not have an illuminated tag light. Police followed the vehicle out to Highway 114, the Lyerly Highway, and initiated a traffic stop at the Dollar General Store. As they approached the vehicle, officers noticed the smell of marijuana. During a probable cause search, officers discovered amphetamines and opium derivatives inside the vehicle which were not the driver’s. Kevin Todd Bain of an Allen Street, Summerville address admitted that the pills were not prescribed to him and was charged with drug possession and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
Two people were arrested at Walmart in Trion on March 1st. According to a report released this week by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, loss prevention employees with Walmart called for law enforcement after they discovered a man who had been previously trespassed, was seen inside the store. When deputies arrived they found the subject in the grocery section of the store. Deputies arrested twenty-one-year-old Billy Wayne Robinson, Jr. and charged him with criminal trespass, financial transaction card fraud, intent to cheat or defraud a retailer and theft by shoplifting. A woman who was with Robinson, identified as Casey Nicole Wooden had outstanding warrants. She was additionally charged with intent to cheat or defraud a retailer and theft by shoplifting. Two minor children who were with the couple were turned over to family members and Robinson and Wooden were booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
The AJC reports one of the most serious cyberattacks to ever hit the health care system is causing major disruptions in care at hospitals of all sizes in Georgia and across the country. Anna Adams, a spokeswoman for the Georgia Hospital Association, said the hack was “very serious” with far-reaching impacts at what appears to be quickly growing into a crisis. The American Hospital Association called it “the most significant cyberattack on the U.S. health care system in American history.”
Cedar Bluff, Alabama Police Chief Jeremy Stepps released details this week of a February high speed chase where Cherokee County 911 received a call from Floyd County Georgia advising that Floyd County officers were involved in a high-speed pursuit of a 2010 Gray Hyundai Sonata driven by a white male. Floyd County advised that they had lost sight of the vehicle around the bypass in Coosa. Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Cedar Bluff Police spotted the vehicle on Hwy 9 North of Hwy 35. The vehicle started passing vehicles in an attempt to elude officers. Cherokee County Deputies and Alabama State Troopers set up spike strips at The Country Store. Deputies had a successful spike hitting two of the tires. The vehicle continued travelling on Al Hwy 9 turning onto Hwy 68 East and then onto Martha Vera Lane. The vehicle went into the side yard of The Big Chill Snow Cone, striking a picnic table, destroying it and then hitting the side of a building. The vehicle came to a stop and the driver jumped out a ran on foot. After a brief foot chase the suspect was taken into custody by Cherokee County Deputies and Cedar Bluff Police without incident. He was identified as 40-year-old Christoper Pruitt of Forsyth; Ga. Pruitt was transported to the Cherokee County Jail where he awaits bond and then extradition back to Floyd County Georgia where he as active felony warrants.
Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s (GNTC) Emergency Medical Services and Paramedicine programs have earned reaccreditation by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).
The Chattooga Chamber will hold their monthly luncheon for March coming up on March 19th at Noon at the Chattooga County Civic Center in Summerville. The Sara Hightower Regional Library is the sponsor of this month’s meeting. The guest speaker will be Kim Holder who is the Director of the University of West Georgia’s Center for Economic Education and Financial Literacy and Senior Lecturer of Economics in the Richards College of Business where she teaches undergraduate economics courses, serves as a faculty research mentor for undergraduate students, and facilitates regional, state, national, and international outreach to K-16 students, teachers, and their surrounding communities. She’s an alumna of UWG and Georgia State University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies and the immediate Past President of the National Association of Economic Educators. Area residents interested in a career in health care with Atrium Health Floyd will have multiple opportunities during a Spring Fling job fair at the Rome Civic Center on March 18.
Word came on Wednesday that Summerville City Councilman David Ford had passed away after battling an illness. Mr. Ford was a graduate of Chattooga High School and studied at West Georgia State University. He served on the Summerville City Council, with the Summerville Fire Department, and was a frequent volunteer at many Summerville Main Street events. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
