State Rep. Eddie Lumsden (R-Armuchee) has released his weekly legislative report from the Georgia General Assembly. Lumsden says that lawmakers passed a bipartisan bill that aims to modernize healthcare regulations in Georgia. Some Georgia senators want to punish cities and counties that they say are illegally harboring immigrants who are in the country without permission by cutting off most state aid to the local government and removing elected officials from office.
Chattooga County saw an increase in first-time unemployment claims from December to January. New numbers were released by the Georgia Department of Labor yesterday.
Six people were arrested on drug charges on Wednesday of this week. The suspects included three women and three men, ranging in age from twenty-eight to seventy-years-old. Summerville Police Chief Harold Tucker told WZQZ News on Thursday, that officers received a report about drug activity on Martin Street and responded. Those arrested included: Kristen Williams, age 28; Michelle Smith, age 50; Holly Sue Marshall, age 48; Rodney Henderson, age 50; Russell Branch, age 49 and Jackie Blackmon, age 70. More details of the arrests will be released when an incident report is completed by the Summerville Police Department.
In the past, both local political parties released the names of people who had qualified for office as they qualified. This year, both the Chattooga County Republican Party and the Chattooga County Democratic Party have been tight-lipped about qualifying. Several candidates have posted on social media that they qualified. Republican Coroner Candidate Jeremy “Big Mac” McElhaney posted a picture of himself at the courthouse earlier this week. Seated next to Mr. McElhaney was Magistrate Judge Tracy Maddux. Probate Judge Gary Woods told WZQZ News earlier this week that he had qualified, but that he was leaving it up to the local political parties to release the names of other candidates. The wait will be over at noon today when qualifying officially ends. WZQZ News will have a list of candidates as soon as they are made available.
On Thursday, Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Judge Don Thompson reaffirmed his decision regarding non-vetted candidates by the Catoosa County Republican Party. Judge Thompson says Catoosa County Republican Officials will be fined $1,000 per hour – each – for their failure to abide by his ruling earlier this week.
The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia has issued a Flood Watch for Chattooga County and all of Northwest Georgia from Friday evening until Saturday night. One to four inches of rain is possible.
