The Chattooga County Registrars Office reported that at the close of voting on Monday, there have now been 842 voters cast a ballot during Advance Voting for the 2024 Presidential Preference Primary. Seventy-five absentee by mail ballots have been sent, with thirty-nine returned. The last day to request an absentee ballot for the March 12th Primary was last Friday and the Registrars Office is no longer taking applications for absentee ballots. The Primary will be one week from today. Early voting continues through Friday of this week at the Registrars Office, located at 10017 Commerce Street in Summerville.
A twenty-eight-year-old Chattooga County man was jailed late last month after admitting to police that he was in possession of methamphetamine. According to a report from the Summerville Police Department, two officers were on a joint patrol when they conducted a traffic stop. During the course of questioning the driver, the driver admitted that he did not have a driver’s license. After a consent to search, officers found suspected methamphetamine and a glass pipe on Daniel Renegade Laney. Laney later admitted to the officers that the substance found was methamphetamine. Laney was charged with possession or use of drug related objects and possession of methamphetamine and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
The Chattooga Young Farmers will be hosting a BBQ lunch sale next month. Proceeds from the BBQ sale will go to the Chattooga Young Farmers Scholarship Fund. The lunch will be available for pickup at the Chattooga County Ag Building off Highway 100 in Summerville from 11 AM until 1 PM on Wednesday, April 24th and will consist of a BBQ sandwich, chips and dessert. Deliveries will be available for local businesses.
A new resort hotel that opened this past weekend on Lookout Mountain is being touted as “one of the largest private investments in the history of Walker County”, that according to the Walker County Government. The new 245-room Cloudland at McLemore Resort hotel is part of the Hilton Hotel Curio Collection. The resort employs just over 200 people and during peak-season, the number of employees is expected to top out at over 300. Walker County says that the hotel and resort, located off Highway 157 about eighteen miles north of Chattooga County, is expected to bring in nearly $3 million in sales tax revenue for Walker County.
Former President Donald Trump is planning a campaign event in Rome this weekend. Early plans indicated that the Secret Service and the Trump campaign have been talking to officials in Floyd County about the planned rally. The last time President Trump campaigned in Rome was in 2020, shortly before he lost the election to President Joe Biden. Estimates were that over 20,000 people were at the Richard B. Russell Airport in Rome for that campaign stop four years ago. Reports on Monday indicated that this weekend’s rally would be held at The Forum in Rome. WZQZ will have more information as it becomes available. President Biden is expected to be campaigning in Atlanta this weekend as well. Biden narrowly won Georgia in 2020. It appears that Biden and Trump are headed for a rematch this November.
Firefighters trained over the weekend in Trion. There were nine recruits that participated in the training on Saturday. The 2024 recruit class consisted of students from the Menlo, Teloga, Trion, Summerville, Lyerly and Gore Fire Departments. The training exercise was held at the Trion burn facility and maze. Georgia gas price averages reversed its downward trend. Georgia drivers are paying an average price of $3.20 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). Monday’s state average was 7 cents more than a week ago, 17 cents more than a month ago, and 6 cents more than this time last year. It now costs an average of $48.00 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Georgians are now paying almost $1.00 more to fill up at the pump compared to a year ago.
