Mr. Andy Toles Obit

Andy Toles, age 59 of the Scottsville Community, passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 due from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Murray County.

Andy was born on February 19, 1953 in Floyd County. He was the son of the late William Porter Toles and Laverne Scott Toles. Andy was a member of the Meadowdale Baptist Church and “Missionaries on Bikes.” He was employed by Allied Transportation / TSU of Ranger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Albert and Stella Scott.

Survivors include: his wife, Neva Toles of the Scottsville Community; two step-sons: Shane Patterson of Calhoun and Ben Patterson of Asheville, NC; one sister, Pam McMurray and her husband Bill of Hendersonville, NC; four beloved grandchildren: Dakota, Cheyenne, Hunter and Tate Patterson. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 4pm on Saturday, October 13th from the Meadowdale Baptist Church with Dr. Steven Pearson officiating. Burial will follow in Fain Cemetery.

Pallbearers serving include: Jonathan Scott, Bron Scott, Roger Scott, Dakota Patterson, Dutch Scott, Kelly Scott, Danny Goswick and Danny Hensley.

Honorary Pallbearers will be “Missionaries on Bikes.”

The family will receive friends from 5 – 8pm on Friday, October 12th at the funeral home.

Mrs. Esther Lynn Thompson Obit (M)

Mrs. Esther Lynn Thompson, age 66, of Gaylesville, AL, died Thursday, October 11, 2012 at her residence.

Mrs. Thompson was born April 20, 1946 in Trion, GA, the daughter of the late Bertha Ingle Mitchell. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Thompson was a member of Faith Baptist Church. Other than her mother, she was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Mitchell.

Survivors include her husband, James Thompson; son, Michael Thompson, daughters, Cindy Rowlls, Paula Penson, and Beth Storey; brothers, Roy Mitchell and J. W. Mitchell; sisters, Evelyn Burleson and Betty Sue Sanford; 11 Grandchildren; and 3 Great Grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m EST on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at Mason Funeral Home with Rev. Sanford DeBerry and Rev. J. W. Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at Union Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Donovan Thompson, Dale Storey, Michael Thompson, Jordan Penson, Austin Penson, Terry Rowlls, Richard Penson, and Tim Bullington. Honorary pallbearers are Ricky Storey and Lance Rowlls.

Mrs. Thompson will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p. m. EST on Saturday, October 13, 2012.

Mr. Benny Seals Brown Obit (M)

Mr. Benny Seals Brown, age, 66, of Calhoun, GA died Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at Kindred Hospital in Rome, GA.

Mr. Brown was born May 29, 1946 in Trion, GA, the son of the late Willie Matt Brown and Sara Mae Sparks Brown. He was a self-employed truck driver. Mr. Brown was a member of the Berryton Church of God. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Benji Brown.

Suvivors include sons, Chris Brown, Tracy Brown, and Mitchell Brown; sisters, Doris J. White, Willie S. Sizemore, and Leila Ward; brother, Freddy Brown; grandchildren, Brittny Walker, Ryan Brown, and Seth King; great grandchild, Annabella King.

Graveside services will be held at 4:30 p. m. Friday, October 12, 2012 at Summerville Cemetery with Rev. Barry Brown officiating.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the Summerville Cemetery at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

T/SGT. Donald Edwin Baggett Obit (Henderson)

  U.S. Air Force Retired. T/Sgt. Donald Edwin Baggett, age 73, of 160 Meadowbrook Lane, Summerville, passed away on Monday morning, October 8, 2012, in a local hospital.

Mr. Baggett was born in Chattooga County, Georgia on September 4, 1939, son of Bessie Josephine Rosser Baggett and the late John Franklin Baggett.  He was a graduate of Pepperell High School and was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years of service.  Prior to ill health, Mr. Baggett was a volunteer with Heyman Hospicecare of Floyd Medical Center.  He was a member of the Lyerly First Baptist Church where he was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class.  In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Sandra Holsomback Baggett, in 1993, and by a sister, Judy Kyzar.

            Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Elizabeth Sims, to whom he was married on October 13, 1994; 2 sons, Donald Jeffrey Baggett and his wife, Tina, Summerville, and Jonathan Baggett, and his wife, Leisa, Plainville; his mother Mrs. Bessie Josephine Baggett, Lindale; a sister, Barbara Baker, Silver Creek; 4 grandchildren, James Christopher Baggett, Jenifer Miller, Sandra Baggett, and Caitlin Baggett; nieces and nephews also survive.

            Funeral services will be held at 3pm on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, in the Chapel at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Barry Peppers and the Rev. James Baird officiating.  Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens at 4:30pm Wednesday with military personnel from Robins Air Force Base providing military honors.

            The family will receive friends at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6pm until 8pm.  At other hours, they may be contacted at the residence.

            Both active and honorary pallbearers are asked to assemble at Henderson & Sons Funeral Home on Wednesday at 2:30pm and include:  Active: Todd Baker, Tim Baker, Jason Winters, Andrew Daniels, David Reynolds, Ray Brock, Steve Peppers, Travis Hunter, Ryan Hunter, and Bobby Abrams.  Honorary: members of the Adult Sunday School Class of Lyerly First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Frances Ponder Obit (ER)

MRS. FRANCES PONDER, age 82, of Hammond Drive-Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday, October 8, 2012, morning. She was a member of South Summerville Baptist Church, born in Trion, Georgia on June 13, 1930, a daughter of the late Robert E. and Mae Bohannon Gilmer, who died while Mrs. Ponder was a young child and was reared by her grandmother the late Maebelle Gilmer. 

Surviving are husband-Henderson F. Ponder; two Daughters and sons-in-law- Claudette and Jerry Mahan of Summerville and Jenette and Coleman Slay, Jr. of Armuchee; Five Grandchildren, Four Great Grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 10th, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Bryant and Rev. David Craven officiating, interment in the Family Plot of Summerville Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be Jeremy Mahan, Terry Mahan, Rainer Slay, Robert Floyd, Emory Gilmer, Randall Ledford, and Eric White. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home. At other hours the Family will be at the residence of a daughter Jenette & Coleman Slay, Jr. #562 Floyd Springs Road-Armuchee.

Mr. Carl D. Sanford Obit (ER)

MR. CARL D. SANFORD, age 71, of Holland-Chattoogaville Road, Lyerly, Georgia passed away Friday (October 5, 2012) in a Rome hospital. A native of Round Mountain, Alabama, He was born to the late Cicero and Rena Ward Sanford on December 17, 1940. Mr. Sanford graduated Mississippi State University on a football scholarship and began a forty year manufacturing Executive career in Summerville, Georgia with Georgia Rug Mill, later Bigelow-Sanford Rug Mill; then to Canada, then with BASF/Honeywell in Dalton. Afterward retiring to the 750 acre Family farm on Holland-Chattoogaville Road.

Surviving are His wife-Tippy Sanford; sons-Colter Sanford of Chattoogaville and Tyler of Summerville; grandchildren-Carlie Sanford, Colton Sanford, Ayla Sanford, and Cason Sanford; sister-Dixie Messer of Cedar Bluff, AL; brothers-Sam Sanford of Cedar Bluff, AL and D.C. Sanford of Jamestown, Al; several Nieces and Nephews.

 

His Family will receive friends Sunday, October 7th, from 3 until 5 P.M. @ the residence on Holland-Chattoogaville Road-Lyerly. A Private Funeral service will be held at a later date.

Mrs. Frances Kellett Cochran Obit (EP)

Mrs. Frances Kellett Cochran, age 92 of Rome, GA formerly of Summerville, GA passed away Thursday October 4, 2012 at Redmond Regional Medical Center.  Mrs. Cochran was born September 16, 1920 in Holland, GA.  She was a L.P.N. with Harbin Clinic, a member of the Central Homemakers Club, and was a quilter.  Mrs. Cochran was Baptist by faith.

Mrs. Cochran was preceded in death by husband, Eugene William Cochran, Sr., daughter, Susan JoAnne Cochran; father and mother, James Frank Kellett, Sr. and Edna Chambers Kellett; sisters, Jo Anne Henderson and Iralyne Rhinehart.

Mrs. Cochran is survived by daughter, Linda Carol Cochran of Rome, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Eugene William and Carol Cochran, Jr. of Tijeras, New Mexico; and brother, James Frank Kellett, Jr. of Acworth, GA; 2 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be conducted Sunday, October 7, 2012 at 2:30 p.m. from the Summerville Cemetery with Rev. Ken Johnson officiating. 

 Visitation will be Sunday, October 7, 2012 at the Erwin-Petitt Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Mrs. Joyce Bowman Plunkett Obit (M)

Mrs. Joyce Bowman Plunkett, age 78, of Trion, GA, passed away Wednesday October 3, 2012 at her residence.

Mrs. Plunkett was born October 24, 1933, the daughter of John Jackson and Fannie Stansell Bowman. Mrs. Plunkett was a member of the Trion United Methodist Church, retired from Mohawk Carpet Mills, and preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Allen Plunkett, 6 brothers and 4 sisters.

Survivors include her children, Valerie Plunkett and Greg Plunkett, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday October 5, 2012, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Art Graves, Rev. David Autry, and Rev. Jennie Andone officiating with interment in the West Hill Cemetery.

Active pallbearers, Tracy Brown, Brad Brown, Jody Anderson, Barry Bowman, Danny Spraggins, Larry Stansell. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Trion United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Vivian Carol Norris Lea Obit (M)

Mrs. Vivian Carol Norris Lea, age 70, of Marissa, IL died Thursday, September 27, 2012

at Sparta Community Hospital in Sparta, IL.

 

Mrs. Lea was born May 31, 1942 in Salem, MO, the daughter of the late Joseph and

Doris Matheny Norris.  She was a cutter for the garment industry, later working as a

waitress at the White Lantern Restaurant in Marissa.  She was a member of the Tilden

Presbyterian Church, where she served as deacon.  She was also a member of the

Monday Morning Breakfast Club and was a former member of the Red Hat Society.

 

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Terry Lea, whom she married on February 17, 1968 in Red Bud, IL and who passed away on February 1, 1995;

and two sons; Harlon Lea and Benny Lea.

 

Survivors include her children, Terry Lea, Kay Lubiewski, Rick Hammond, David Lea,

Marilyn Windsor, and Herschel Lea; 21 Grandchildren; 31 Great Grandchildren; and

a very close friend, Marge Green.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a. m. Thursday, October 4, 2012 at Mason Funeral

Home.  Burial will follow in Bankhead Cemetery.

 

Pallbearers will be Jason Lubiewski, Zachary Lay, David Lea, Stanley Lubiewski, Robert Smith and Dennis Lea.  Honorary Pallbearers will be John Lubiewski, Robert Lea, DJ Lea, and Jim Moses.

Ms. Janice Naida Ann Mitchell, age 78 of 51 Williams Street, Lyerly passed away Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Kindred Hospital in Rome. She was born June 7, 1934 in Cherokee County, Ala., daughter of the late Wallace Grady & Mildred Pearl Stowe Edge. She was a housewife and was a member of Four Mile Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband: Lee Roy Mitchell; parents; daughter: Latrica Ann Mitchell; son: Laru Roy Mitchell; 2 brothers: Donald & Larry Edge; grandson: Stephen Matthew Blalock.

Survivors include 4 daughters & sons-in-law: Loretta Mitchell Reynolds, Lyerly; Lorraine Mitchell Smith, Lafayette; Lanada & Andy Payton, Centre, Al; Lisa & Marty Slayton, Cedar Bluff, Al.; brother: Wilburn Edge, Ft.
