Mrs. Nola Alice Palmer Obit (M)

Mrs. Nola Alice Palmer, age 88, of Summerville, GA, died Sunday, January 11, 2015, at the Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Palmer was born March 1, 1926, in Trion, GA, daughter of the late Hershel DeWight and Emma Jean Bryson Dover.  Prior to her retirement, she was employed with Bigelow-Sanford.  She also sat with the elderly.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, L. T. Palmer; a son, Hershel Gordon Veatch; brothers, Bob Dover, H. T. Dover, and Grady Thomas Dover.

Mrs. Palmer is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky Lee and Beverly Veatch, Larry Clayton and Diane Veatch, Brenda Veatch – Haynes; a brother, Hubert Dover; sisters, Betty Dover, Helen Ponder, Doris Patterson, and Anne Cook; 9 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Palmer will be held at 3:00 P.M. Monday, January 12, 2015 from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Odom officiating.  Interment will follow in the West Hill Cemetery.  Active pallbearers will be Casey Veatch, Lee Veatch, Dustin Veatch, Chris Cook, Brandon Veatch, Jackie Moore, and Stacy Mitchell.  Honorary pallbearers will the Staff of Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Palmer will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 2:00 P.M. until the hour of service on Monday.

Ms. Betty Jean Himes Obit (C)

Ms. Betty Jean Himes, age 59 of Centre, AL passed away Wednesday, Januaryt 17, 2015 at her residence.  Ms. Himes was born May 2, 1955 in Batesville, Indiana.  She was a self-employed entreprenauer; very giving and kind caregiver, and loved to cook.  Ms. Himes was Methodist by faith.

  Ms. Himes was preceded in death by a  brother, Victor Himes; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Himes.

 Ms. Himes is survived by father and step-mother, James Himes, Sr. and Joyce Himes; son, Byron Becker (Tammy Morrow); brother, James Himes, Jr.; sister, Donna Bosserman; uncle and aunt, Harold and Edna Himes; special aunts and uncles, Bob and Joyce Peppers, Pam and Charles Himes, and Bob and Sandra Himes; step-brothers, Butch and John Paul Ramey; step-sister, Faye Marton; cousins, nieces and nephews.

 Memorial service will be held Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at the Anne Kresge United Methodist Church, 15 Booger Hollow Road, Cedartown, GA with Rev. John Giglio officiating.

Mrs. Betty Fay Cooper Obit (C)

Mrs. Betty Fay Cooper, age 67, of Summerville, GA passed away Thursday, January 8, 2015 at the Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Cooper was born in Collinsville, Alabama on February 23, 1947 daughter of the late Houston Richard Rape and Eva Jewel Copeland Rape.  She attended the Harrell Street Church of God and enjoyed working in the garden.  She was a homemaker.  Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by a son, Steven Richard Trammell; sister, Doris Rape and two grandsons, A.J. Trammell and Rocky Trammell. 

Mrs. Cooper is survived by her husband, Clayton Cooper; her children, Kenny Trammell, Billy Trammell, Tony Trammell, Jessie Trammell, Anthony Trammell, Chris Trammell, Bret Trammell, Richard Bingham, Ponda Trammell and Tammy Trammell; brothers, Lamar Rape and Gary Rape; sister, Louise Rape; grandchildren, Jessie Trammell, Dakoda Trammell, Jason Elders, Kasey Trammell, Alex Trammell Sabrina Christine Bingham, Latasha Fowler, Betty Fowler, Chasity Holcomb, Dustin Walker, Patsy Trammell, Mandy Trammell, Samantha Trammell, Courtney Trammell, Destiny Trammell, Brandon Trammell; a number of additional grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Cooper will be held Sunday, January 11, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. in the Petitt Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. Rodney Kinsey officiating.  Interment will follow in the Mosley Cemetery.

Mrs. Ruth W. Ratliff Obit (ER)

MRS. RUTH W. RATLIFF, age 89, of Holland, Georgia passed away Tuesday,
 January 6, 2015, at Her residence.  A native of Mendocino, California, She 
was born to the late Chester R. and Susie Gordon Walbridge, on January 30, 
1925.  During WW II, She worked for Georgia/Pacific helping supply wood 
products to our Military for the war effort.  She married her late husband, 
Bolling Ratliff, in 1943, while he was serving in the military.  Later returning to 
Chattooga County where She was long time secretary for the Lyerly School 
system.  Mrs. Ratliff was of the Presbyterian Faith.

Surviving are daughter-Cindy Fulton of Trion; sons-Doug Ratliff of
 Holland and Dr. Larry Ratliff of Anderson, S.C.; grandchildren-Stephanie 
Cromer of Lyerly, Dee Fulton of Albany, GA., Scott Fulton of Calhoun, 
Arden Ratliff of Charleston, S.C., and Lauren Givillo of Seattle, Washington.

Ms. Jacqueline Nannette Sammons Obit (M)

Ms.  Jacqueline Nannette Sammons, age 53, of Fort Oglethorpe, GA, passed away Sunday January 4, 2015, at her home.

Ms. Sammons was born October 1, 1961, in Tampa, FL, the daughter of Helen Vine and the late Milburn Teems.  She was a homemaker and member of the Chesterfield Baptist Church.  Ms. Sammons was preceded in death by her father Milburn Teems and step-father Ernest Purcell.

Survivors include her mother Helen Vine, son Jason Sammons, daughters Shannon Langston and Casey Bice, brothers Charles “Buddy” Purcell and William Purcell, sisters Linda Lawson, Charlotte Flood, Wanda Hunnicutt-Styles, Dorothy Thompson, Debra McCary, grandchildren Sean and Mason Sammons, Kaite Richiez and Ayvah and Mia Langston.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday January 10, 2015, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Greg Ledford officiating.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m on Saturday.

Mr. Thomas Dale Adams Obit (M)

Mr. Thomas Dale Adams, age 62, of Trion, GA, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2015, at his residence.

Mr. Adams was born March 8, 1952, in Rome, GA, the son of Gladys Catherine Crozier Adams and the late Miriam Thomas Adams.  He was employed with Chattooga Tank and Pipe as a truck driver.

Survivors include his mother, Gladys Adams, daughters, Jennifer Lynn Palmer, Missy Darlene Hamby, sisters, Patricia Little, Brenda Allen, Beverly Fortenberry, 7 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 6, 2015,  from the Floyd Memory Gardens with Rev. Terry Shores officiating.   Active pallbearers will be Scott Palmer, Sammy Hamby, Sonny O’Berry,  Albert Little, Cody Harmon, and Matthew Cantrell.

Mrs. Martha Fannie Rogers Obit (M)

Mrs.  Martha Fannie  Rogers, age 74, of Tunnel Hill, GA, passed away Friday January 2, 2015, in Erlanger Hospital.

Mrs. Rogers was born February 22, 1940, in Summerville, GA, the daughter of the late Thomas Lee and Nellie Jane Craig Helton.  She was retired from Mohawk Carpet Mill.

Survivors include her husband , William Eugene Rogers, sons, Troy Davis Rutledge, Randy LaDon Warren, Luther Eugene Rogers, daughter, Lois Helton, brother, Robert Helton, 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren.

Ms. Jimmie Faye Kellett Watson Obit (M)

Jimmie K. Watson, 85, of Roswell, GA. died on January 2, 2015 in Marietta, GA. Ms. Watson moved to Roswell from Atlanta in 1978. She grew up working on a farm in Holland GA and never forgot how to grow a wonderful garden or catch a fish.    Ms. Watson was preceded in death by her parents William Thomas Kellett and Abbye Lena Chambers Kellett; sisters Dorothy Nour, Marynell Kellett, and Mozelle Kilcrease; and brothers William Thomas Kellett, Jr.  and John Frank Kellett, Sr.   She is survived by her sister Betty Bush, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins. 

Ms. Watson was a graduate of Crawford Long Nursing School and McCloud School of Anesthesiology, and was employed by Physician Specialists in Anesthesia, PC, for almost 40 years, retiring in 1995.  As a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Ms. Watson participated in pioneering heart surgeries that were undertaken at St. Joseph’s Hospital at the time.  One physician always requested that Ms. Watson put his patients to sleep because she made the patients feel more relaxed and they often commented about how comfortable they felt.   

Ms. Watson was an avid sports fan.  She played basketball in high school and college, but she loved nursing so much that she gave up a semi-pro basketball career to continue her nursing.  She had an ability to quote a wide variety of statistics on basketball, football, baseball, hockey and even her least favorite, golf.  She was known to be an excellent listener, a generous giver, thankful in every way, was adored by her family and was always a loyal friend.  Ms. Watson enjoyed traveling throughout her life.  She had been to all of the states except Hawaii, and especially loved Alaska, and enjoyed England and Scotland. Camping and hiking were hobbies as were birdwatching and photography.  The First Baptist Church of Roswell was her church home. 

Funeral services for Ms. Watson  will be at her childhood church of New Hope South Baptist Church in Holland, Georgia at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, January 10, 2015 with Rev. Andrew Kellett officiating. Burial will follow in the New Hope South Baptist Church Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Tom Hawkins, John F. Kellett, Jr., Andrew Kellett, Scott Sparks, Jason Kellett, and Scott Eli Sparks.  Ms. Watson will be in state at New Hope South Baptist Church and the family will receive friends from 11:00 A.M. until the hour of service on Saturday.  Instead of flowers, contributions may be made to either church, or to a charity of your choice.  Arrangements have been made with Mason Funeral Home in Summerville, Georgia.  

Mrs. Flora Williams Howell Obit (C)

Mrs. Flora Williams Howell, age 88, of Trion, GA passed away Friday, January 02, 2015 at the Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Howell was born in Geraldine, Alabama on September 11, 1926, daughter of the late Elbert Estes and Eldora Addison Estes. She was a member of the Pennville First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 55 years, sang in the choir and was a G.A. and WMU director and teacher. Mrs. Howell was employed with the former Reigel Glove Mill, and retired from Best Manufacturing, where she was a member of the Best Silver Club. Following her retirement, she worked with The Pregnancy Resource Center. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Howell was preceded in death by her stepmother, Velma Estes; first husband, Eugene Williams, and her second husband, Dalton Howell.

Mrs. Howell is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Deborah Williams of Summerville; daughter and son-in-law, Annette and James Mashburn of Crossville, AL; sister and brother-in-law, Edna and Jim Stricklin; sisters-in-law, Betty Duckett and Madge Smith; grandchildren, Amy and Jay White, Kelli Tibbett, Jamie Waldrip and Traci Mashburn; great grandchildren, Brooke and Marcus Tibbett, Beth Durham, Abby and Judson White, David and Katie Jenkins, Hailie and Taylor Morgan, and Jackson and Kennedi Waldrip; one great great granddaughter, Mackenzie Tibbett; Special Cousin, Helen Anthony of Trussville, AL; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Howell will be held Sunday, January 4, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. in the Petitt Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. George Palmer, Rev. Billy Dempsey and Bro. Johnny Wynn officiating. Interment will follow in the Green Hills Memory Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Stricklin, Vic Stricklin, Drew Stricklin, Evan Scott, Jay White, Judson White, Brock Rutledge and Josh Rutledge. Mrs. Myrtle Joyce Speer, age 74, of Gaylesville, AL, died Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at Floyd Medical Center.

 

Mrs. Speer was born August 2, 1940, in Menlo, GA, daughter of the late James Lewis Langston and Ruby Lee Hester Deering. She was a homemaker and was Church of God by faith.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Speer.

 

Mrs. Speer is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Larry J. and Brandy Speer; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Danny Hicks, Christy and Lane Bailey, Debra and Darren Hamilton; a sister, Willie Woodall; grandchildren, Joey Hicks, Stephanie Hicks, Amber Compton, David Sanford, Brody Bailey, Nikki Mullins, and Travis Hamilton.

 

Funeral services for Mrs. Speer will be held at 12:00 Noon (E.S.T.) Friday, January 2, 2015, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mike Edwards officiating.  Interment will follow in the Union Hill (Needmore) Cemetery.  Active Pallbearers will be Dan Hicks, Lane Bailey, Darren Hamilton, Joey Hicks, David Sanford, and Brody Bailey.  Travis Hamilton will serve as Honorary Pallbearer.
