Mrs. Velma Mae Cross, age 100, of Aragon, GA died Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Oakview Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Cross was born November 25, 1908 in Chattooga County, GA, the daughter of the late William Edgar and Mary Sudie Williams Holland. She was retired from Mt. Vernon Mills. Mrs. Cross was a member of the Pleasant Grove Church of Christ.

Survivors include a daughter, Sue Newsome, Aragon, GA; sister, Geneva Nix, Muscle Shoals, AL, grandson, Michael Newsome; granddaughters, Rita Tanner and Jaque Newsome; 12 Great-grandchildren; and 16 Great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Saturday, January 24, 2009 at West Hill Cemetery with Min. Hugh Glaze officiating. Pallbearers will be Tyler Newsome, Randy Hall, Tommy Hall, Micah Maddux, Michael Newsome, and Gary Battles.

Mrs. Cross will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until the service hour on Saturday.

 

McGuire Obit

Mrs. Charlotte Julie B. McGuire, age 58, of Summerville, passed away Thursday, January 22, 2009 at Redmond Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. McGuire was born in Chattooga County, Georgia on July 14, 1950, daughter of the late Herman J.D. Hunter and Joann Ledford Hunter.  She was a member of the Shepherd’s Chapel in Gravette, Arkansas and was a homemaker.Mrs. McGuire is survived by her husband, James Lee McGuire; son and daughter-in-law, Merle and Lisa McGuire; daughters and son-in-law, Kathy and Henry Millsap,
Donna McGuire, and Wanda Goodenough; brothers, Herman Hunter, Jr. and Lee Fountain; sisters, Syble Miller and Sue Youngblood all of Summerville; Grandchildren, Julie Walker, Charli Hensley, Chris Brady, Nick Goodenough, Justin Goodenough, Darin McGuire and Ashley McGuire; Great Grandchildren, Barrett Walker, Colton Walker, Hunter Cook, Dalton Brady and Faith Goodenough.
Funeral  Services for Mrs. McGuire will be held Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of the Mason Funeral Home with Rev. Junior Evans officiating.  Interment will follow in the Summerville Cemetery.Pallbearers will be Justin Goodenough, Darin McGuire, Josh Cook, Lance Walker, Herman Hatfield, and Thomas Miller.

Hegwood Obit

Mr. Barry Gordon Hegwood, age 48, of Lakeland, FL died Tuesday, January 20, 2009 in Lakeland, Florida.

Mr. Hegwood was born October 9, 1960 in Chattooga County, GA. He was a truck driver. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Forrest “Babe” and Addie Lou Williams Hegwood, and Gordon “Bill” and Helen Key.

Survivors include his parents, Ross & Mary Hegwood, Cloudland, GA; brother and sister- in-law, Yogi & Shanne Hegwood, Menlo, GA; sister & brother-in-law, Jane & Lamar Canada, Cloudland, GA; and 1 Niece and 4 Nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Sunday, January 25, 2009 from the graveside at Mt. Olive Cemetery. Rev. Tommy Pledger will officiate.

In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Mrs. Marie Fowler Plunkett, age 81, of Summerville, GA died Wedne sday, January 21, 2009at Summit Rehabilitation Center in Rome, GA.
Mrs. Plunkett was born December 3, 1927 in Bessemer, AL, the daughter of the late CarlM. Fowler, SR and Esther Rebecca=2 0Linderman Fowler. Mrs. Plunkett was a member ofSubligna Baptist Church.  She was active in church activities, having served for 44 years as a Sunday School Teacher.  She also taught in Vacation Bible School.  Mrs. Plunkett was
retired Director of Oak Hill Museum of Berry College.  She was a member of the ChattoogaCounty Homemaker’s Club.  She was a graduate of the Carroll Lynn School of Business.Mrs. Plunkett’s hobbies included quilting, travel, painting, crafts, doll making, and collecting.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Henry Fowler.

Mr. William M. (Bill) Dodd, age 91, of Summerville, GA, passed away Friday January 16, 2009, in Oakview Nursing and Rehab Center. Mr. Dodd was born August 18, 1917, in Summerville, GA, the son of the late John H. & Fannie Tucker Dodd. He was a member of the Lyerly Pentecostal Tabernacle, private first class teletype operator in the 126th Army airways communication System squadron and a retired textile worker. He was preceded in death by a son, David Dodd, grandson, Charlie Shipman, 2 brothers & 1 sister. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Tucker Dodd, children, Billy Powell Dodd, Gleen H. Dodd, Jackie Lamar Jones, Myrion Todd Jones, Myra Lynn Weatherby, Donna Shipman, Shelia Lynn Minard, Robin Gibbens, brother, Cooley Dodd, 21 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren. Blalock Obit

Mrs. Wanda Orr Blalock, age 62 of Summerville, passed away Saturday at her residence following a brief illness.  She was born in Trion March 9, 1946 to the late Roy and Nora Crane Orr.  She was a member of Dry Valley Baptist Church and was a retired teacher fromt he Trion School System.  Wanda was preceded in death by her husband the late Michael Blalock.

Surviving are son – Josh Blalock of Summerville, beloved "special children" – Lula Gonzalez and Belle Gonzalez; special friends and sisters in Christ – Grace Sunday School Class of Dry Valley Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held Monday January 19th at 2:30 PM from the JD Hill Memorial Chapel of the Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Weaver and Rev. Waydel Howell officiating.  Interment in West Hill Cemetery.  Active pallbearers- Wayne Parker, Roy Bowers, Johnny Collette, Buford Lee Fox, Tommy Pettyjohn, and Sammy Pilgrim; Honorary Pallbearers – fellow teachers and former students of Trion High School and the Grace Sunday School Class of Dry Valley Baptist Church.  Visitation will be Monday from 10:30 until the hour of service at the Funeral Home.

Mary Nell Pinion Humphrey Obituary

Mrs. Mary Bell Pinion Humphrey, age 82 of Summerville, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2009 at National Health Care in Rossville, GA. Mrs. Humphrey was born November 10, 1926 in Chattooga County, Georgia. She had been employed with Hurley’s Food Center and was a member of Bethel Methodist Church.

Mrs. Humphrey was preceeded indeath by her husband, Claude B. "Jack" Humphrey; father and mother, Amos Clifton Pinion and Mary belle Hawkins Pinion; brothers Joseph Clifton Pinion, Raymon Lee Pinion, Felton Pinion, J.W. Pinion and Sylvester Pinion.

She is survived by her daughter, Jackie Mae Humphrey of Summerville, GA; Sisters-in-law Resedale Pinion of Centre, AL and Ann Young of Summerville, GA; brother in-law and sister-in-law Henry and Claire Humphrey of Rossville, GA; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 17th, at 3:00pm from the chapel of the Erwin-Pettit Funeral Home with Rev. George Pinion and Rev. Roger Morgan officiating. Interment will follow in West Hill Cemetary.

Mrs. Humphrey wil lie-in-state Saturday, January 17th at the Erwin-Pettit Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00pm.

Pallbeareres will be Mike Humphrey, Chris Humphrey, Jimmy Pinion, Gerald Pinion, David Ward, and Jeff Ward. The family requests no food and in lieu of flowers that donations be made to your favorite charity.

 

Blackmon Obit

Mr. Chester Blackmon, age 71 of Rose Circle Trion passed away Wednesday  January 14th in a Rome Hospital.  He was born in Paulding County, Ga.l on June 28th, 1937 to the late Rufus harrison Blackmon and Lillian may Evans Blackmon who survives.  Mr. Blackmon was a Holiness by Faith and was employed in the Weaving Department of Mt. Vernon Mills.  He was preceded in death by a brother the late Wayne Kenneth Blackmon and Sister the late Emma Jean Burroughs.  Surviving are his wife Bonnie Blackmon, mother Lillian Blackmon of Paulding Co.  , daughters
