Another Northwest Georgia municipality is one step closer to having a liquor store inside the city limits. 

Once a have for “dry counties” and “dry towns”, voters in the Northwest Georgia region have shown a willingness to allow alcohol sales, including the sale of hard liquor, over the past several years.

Recently, the town of Cave Spring in Floyd County approved a packaged liquor license for a local businessman who has operated a convenience store and gas station in the town for several years.  Voters in Cave Spring approved the sale of liquor over a year ago, and town officials say that the new liquor store license has been approved at the local level and the business is now waiting for approval from the state.

Currently, in Chattooga County, the only place you can purchase packaged liquor is in the Town of Lyerly.  Lyerly voters signed a petition back in 2010 to allow a vote on allowing liquor stores to operate inside the city limits.  On November 3, 2010, residents of Lyerly voted 54-45 to allow for packaged liquor licenses.  TJ Package Store in Lyerly is the only liquor store in the county.

Sale of liquor by the drink is allowed in the City of Summerville, along with package sales of beer and wine.  The county government and Trion have similar ordinances.  The City of Menlo remains the only “dry” municipality in the county.
