Some cell phone users were without service in Chattooga County on Thursday afternoon.  AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio spoke with Karen Smith, regional media contact for Verizon Wireless, who stated that a Verizon tower in Summerville was struck by lightning and sustained considerable damage.  According to Smith, the outage affected other Verizon Cell Phone Towers in the Northwest Georgia Area.  After the damage was discovered, Verizon located parts that had to be trucked in to the Chattooga County area in order to make repairs to the cell phone towers.  Smith said that Verizon regretted the temporary loss of service to Chattooga County customers and that the company hoped to have service restored sometime on Thursday evening.
