A telecommunications company is planning to lease land in Lyerly to construct a cell phone tower, and some residents are not happy about the proposal.  The Town of Lyerly does not have any type of ordinance that would prohibit the tower from being constructed on private property. 

However, Chattooga County does have an ordinance that would apply to cell phone towers.  Commissioner Winters adopted an ordinance that would regulate structures such as cell phone towers.  That ordinance was in the response to a proposal for wind turbines on Lookout Mountain last year. 

The proposed cell phone tower is planned to be built on private property inside the city limits, so the county ordinance does not apply.

Lyerly Town Clerk Joy Hampton told AM 1180 that the cell phone tower topic is on the agenda for Tuesday night’s meeting of the Lyerly Town Council.
