Chattooga County could be facing a big change when the Georgia Legislature draws new maps for Georgia House Districts.  Currently, all of Chattooga County is in one Georgia House district represented by Representative Barbara Massey Reece, (D- Menlo).  The remainder of the House District is made up of rural Floyd County. 

Under the current representative plan a state representative represents around 45,480 people in the Georgia House.  With the new census a state representative will represent 52, 820 people.  Since Chattooga County’s population only grew by a little over 500 people in the last ten years, it could spell big changes for the county’s representation.

At this point no one knows exactly what the new maps will look like.  Representative Barbara Massey Reece serves on the apportionment committee in the Georgia House, which has their work cut out for them.  In order for Chattooga County to remain in a single district, more areas would have to be taken in from surrounding counties to meet the 52, 820 thresh-hold.

Representative Reece stated, "I want counties and communities of interest to be kept together, but that’s not always easy to do,”  when she spoke to the media over the weekend about reapportionment.
