Six people, three women and three men, have applied to become the next member of the Chattooga Board of Education.  The board is expected to select one of the applicants at their meeting coming up this Thursday.

In May, Dr. Julia Houston, who had been elected to represent the Lyerly District on the Board of Education three years ago, announced her resignation.  Dr. Houston had been at odds with the majority of the board about several issues, especially the building of a new school at Menlo.  Houston announced her resignation on the day before Chattooga High School’s graduation.

The board quickly set about to put out the word that interested applicants could submit their names to be considered.  All six of the people who applied did qualify for the position, according to Chattooga County School Supt. Jared Hosmer.  Those submitting their applications were: Charles Cooper, Wendy Cordle, Bonnie Fletcher, Spencer Hogg, Morgan Reynolds and Ron Williams.

This is the second time in less than a year that the Chattooga Board of Education has had to select a member.  In the fall of 2020, elected board member Sam Ballard passed away causing a vacancy on the board.  The board selected former Menlo School Principal and Young Farmer Director Lyn Hall to replace Mr. Ballard, representing the Menlo District.

Whomever is selected this Thursday will serve out the rest of Dr. Houston’s term and have to run for election next year.
