The Chattooga County Board of Education held a called meeting on Wednesday evening to discuss the millage rate for Chattooga County property owners. 

The millage rate is the term used by Georgia taxing authorities to calculate property tax. A mill is one one-thousandth of a dollar, and in property tax terms is equal to $1.00 of tax for each $1,000 of assessment.

Chattooga Board of Education Chairman Eddie Elsberry told WZQZ News, “We had good open discussion. And we looked at the numbers long and hard. After all discussion we voted to roll back Preliminary millage at 12.0. We will have three meetings for public input.”

No one from the public attended the first meeting.

The Chattooga County Board of Education and the Chattooga County Commissioner are the two taxing authorities that set millage rates for county property owners.
