The Chattooga County Chamber of Commerce is transforming its typical monthly gathering into a powerful initiative to combat local food scarcity. The Chamber, in partnership with the Community Resource Center (CRC), is hosting a specialized event called “FEED THE NEED: Lunch + Tour + Food Drive” where the cost of entry is a hefty donation of non-perishable goods.

The unique meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 17th, at noon at the Community Resource Center in Summerville. Organizers emphasize that the public is not only invited but encouraged to participate, highlighting the significant and growing need for assistance within the county.

Instead of the usual lunch fee or membership dues, attendees are asked to bring a LARGE box, bag, or case of pantry items to gain admission and enjoy the provided lunch.

According to Chamber organizers, the requirement reflects the urgent demand for sustainable food supplies at the CRC, which serves as a vital hub for families facing hardship.

“The need is great, and we see an opportunity to combine our monthly networking with a crucial service project,” stated a representative for the Chamber. “By asking attendees to ‘pay’ with a substantial food donation, we can make a direct, immediate impact on local families.”

Focus on Kid-Friendly and Nutritious Items

The CRC has provided a target list of donation items, focusing on goods that are easy for children to prepare and that offer good nutritional value, ensuring the donations are both accessible and sustaining.

Immediate needs include:

  • Complete kits of macaroni and cheese
  • Cereals and oatmeal
  • Powdered milk
  • Peanut butter and jelly, along with sliced bread
  • Canned proteins (tuna, chicken)
  • Easy-open canned fruit and vegetables

Organizers specifically request items that are simple to open and require minimal preparation, recognizing that many recipients may lack full access to kitchen facilities. A detailed Immediate Needs List is available on the event’s online page.

Lunch and Learning Opportunity

The “Feed the Need” event is more than just a food drop-off; it offers attendees a chance to see firsthand how their contributions make a difference. Following the lunch, participants will be provided with a tour of the Community Resource Center, offering insight into the CRC’s operations, various programs, and the logistical challenges of addressing food insecurity locally.

While the community is strongly encouraged to attend and support the cause, reservations are required to ensure adequate seating and lunch provisions. Those interested in attending the Feed the Need Lunch + Tour + Food Drive on November 17th must secure their spot in advance.
