Chattooga County Sole Commissioner Andy Allen is asking residents to remain patient after many property owners recently received their annual property assessment notices showing increases in assessed values.

In a statement released Monday, Allen acknowledged that he, like many residents, also received a notice indicating an increase this year.

Allen emphasized that the assessment value is only one part of the overall property tax equation and does not automatically determine the final tax bill.

“These values help determine the portion of the millage rate each property owner pays,” Allen said. “A higher assessment does not automatically mean a higher tax bill, and in many cases the final tax impact may be smaller than expected once millage decisions are made.”

The commissioner also said additional information is needed before evaluating the overall uniformity of the county’s tax digest.

Allen said the appropriate county offices are actively reviewing the digest to help ensure fairness and accuracy throughout the process before any final decisions are made.

He thanked residents for their patience and understanding while the annual review is completed.
