4-H Happenings

February – March 2016

• 5th and 6th graders from all of the Chattooga County and Trion City Schools traveling to district competitions. All schools will be represented as students deliver a 5-6 minute presentation on a project of their choosing at the competition February 6th. This will help them in developing public speaking skills and build confidence in them.

• 9th -12th grade members will be traveling to our state Capitol on February 3rd to participate in 4-H Leadership day at the capitol. Students will be addressing the house and senate along with visiting with our state representative Eddie Lumsden and Senator Jeff Mullis.

• Twenty Nine, 7th through 12th grade students are preparing to compete at their district competitions in March at Rock Eagle 4-H center. They will be competing against other students from across the state of Georgia. High school 4-H’ers will be competing for the chance to represent their county at State Congress in Atlanta later this year. This competition incudes a portfolio (similar to a resume) which highlights their leadership skills, service learning activities and induvial project work. The Portfolio will be 50% of their total score while presentations make up the additional 50%. This serves a true world to work experience for our young adults.

• On February 18th at the Civic Center at 6p.m. 7th through 12th graders will be showing off the hard work they have put in to their project before heading to competition. Everyone is welcome to come and admire the work that they have put in over the course of the year.

• An ongoing service project for 4-H is pop tab collections. Throughout the year 4-H collects pop tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House to help families stay with children who are sick.

• Another ongoing service project is collecting of old blankets and dog food for the animal shelter. The collections are donated to help out with the cost of taking care of the animals during the year.

• Outstanding customer service is something that is recognized every Friday with the “Service with a Smile Award”. Men and women all over Chattooga County are nominated to receive this award for their outstanding customer service. Contact any 4-H member or the Extension Office to nominate an individual.

• Chattooga County 4-H is taking applications for individuals interested in Shooting Sports. The teams and grade levels for specific disciplines are:

o BB Rifle – 5th -8th graders. Marksmanship is in 4 positions prone, sitting, standing, and kneeling.

o .22 Rim Fire Rifle – 9th -12th graders. Marksmanship is in 3 positions and 25 and 50 meters.

o Modified Trap – 7th -12th graders. Shotgun Competition

o Archery – 5th -12th graders. Participants compete in either compound or re-curve bow disciplines.
