Chattooga County’s 2026 tax levy will be the subject of a public meeting this afternoon as county officials move toward finalizing the property tax rates used for this year’s tax bills.

The meeting is scheduled for 1 PM today at the Hurley Community Development Center, 10050 Commerce Street in Summerville. Chattooga County’s official calendar lists the meeting specifically for the 2026 Tax Levy Resolution and says it will last as long as necessary.

Sole Commissioner Andy Allen serves as the county’s chief legislative and executive officer under Chattooga County’s sole-commissioner form of government.

Today’s action is important to property owners because the county’s tax levy determines the county government’s portion of the property tax rate. The millage rate is applied to taxable property values established through the assessment process to determine the amount of county property tax owed.

The meeting comes after property owners across Chattooga County received their annual notices of assessment this summer and had an opportunity to appeal their property values.

The Chattooga County Board of Education has already set its 2026 school millage rate at 8.518 mills. Today’s county action is separate from the school system’s levy and will establish the county government’s rate.

The county had not posted the new 2026 tax levy rate with its meeting announcement, meaning the final figure should become known following today’s meeting. The county’s online notice currently provides the meeting time, location and purpose but does not list a proposed millage rate.

The Tax Assessor’s Office establishes property values, while tax-bill questions are handled by the Tax Commissioner’s Office.
