Chattooga County residents have rallied with impressive generosity, answering a call from Whitney Allen, wife of Commissioner Andy Allen, to provide vital snack items for local schoolchildren. The initiative saw “bountiful boxes of blessings” distributed to all county schools on Friday, offering discreet nourishment to students ahead of the challenging holiday season.
Allen launched the drive with a specific focus on helping children, recognizing the increased strain on families with the approaching holidays and concerns over potential economic hardships. While acknowledging the crucial work of existing food pantries and organizations like the CRC, Allen expressed a desire to directly assist students with easily accessible and discreet food options.
“My heart is full knowing that when our community sees a need we all work together for the greater good!” Allen shared, deeply grateful for the overwhelming response. “Together we are stronger than we know and the impact this will have will be bigger than we could ever imagine!”
Her focus was on “quick food items” that children and teens could easily slip into their book bags without drawing unwanted attention. Rather than traditional canned goods, preferred donations included protein bars, crackers, small bags of chips, small bags of cereal, and Pop-Tarts. This approach, she noted, ensures students have something that could “hold them over until they are served a nutritious meal at school the next day.”
The initial distribution on Friday saw numerous boxes delivered across the county, a testament to the community’s swift and compassionate action. Allen hopes to continue weekly deliveries if donations allow. “I am beyond grateful for all of the donations so far! My prayer is that I take boxes full each week if possible!” she expressed.
To facilitate ongoing donations, several convenient drop-off locations have been established:
- Chattooga County Commissioners Office
- Chattooga County Courthouse (Kim Windle James’ Office)
- Trion Recreation Department
- Lyerly City Hall
- White’s Alignment
- Chattooga County Water Department
- Duff’s Flowers
Allen also offered to meet individuals for pickups if needed, making it even easier for residents to contribute. Her ultimate goal is to deliver “a tote full of snack items to EVERY school in the county,” a mission she believes will provide immense blessing to the county’s children.
The resounding response underscores Chattooga County’s deep commitment to its youngest residents, showcasing how a collective effort can make a profound difference in the lives of those most vulnerable. As the holiday season approaches, the need for such support is expected to grow, making continued community involvement crucial for the success of this vital initiative.
